Ah, I knew I hadn’t dreamt that….!

Still hoping for some sort of consolidation of mixed use Dom/Int at T2/3 to remove some transit pain points. But that seems to have gone off the boil along with TT being treated like “Domestic”.

I imagine many airlines love the flexibility of being able to take freight or extra freight when passenger loads are light to keep routes profitable; but they wont want to have to divert to WSI to do so. There will for the foreseeable future still be plenty of freight going through SYD on passenger planes.

From a purely selfish POV it won’t be our freight thought.
Australian domestic air freight is our gold mine and from which my bonuses come from. SYD is costing us substantially at the moment

Can someone please post the fact check URL 😉
Your question made me also wonder, so found the master plan currently out for comment to 2 Sept.

Hope I am not infringing copyright, but copied one page with short and long term plans...

Yep, that’s what I mentioned upthread. The potential expansion is more than just duplicating (mirror image) but lengthening the current terminal and then duplicating (probably in stages also).

That looks like many stages to a very large airport at some future date which I will never see.
I am just hoping to see a train to MEL

Good to see long term strategy considered though.

Some new interior footage..
Unfortunately not detailed just a random selection.

The initial gates are reportedly numbered 19-27 so suggest that they will expand left along the current runway to start with.

I don't know how many folks have been able to get behind the paywall and have read of the article from the Oz, but it is pretty damning.

I subscribe, and read it. Agree it was a negative for WSI.

I can't see the attraction of this airport for so-called legacy international airlines. They are unlikely to attract those in J (or F, rarely offered) which is an important component as to how airlines in good economic times make moolah.
I am just hoping to see a train to MEL

Yes, while there is a High Speed Rail Authority, it's making very slow progress, and initially even if funded it'll only be Sydney to Newcastle NSW.

And we've already seen SQ sign-on.

And I suspect the biggest attraction to them is the 24hr ops.
The same could well be true for some of the ME airlines to meet flight banks they can't due to the SYD curfew.

Is that a huge assumption that WSI candidate travellers can't afford J?? I suspect that would be a very wrong assumption to make.
I could be considered to be a WSI "candidate". living in the ACT. Well, it's closer than KSA, but a hell of a lot harder to get to.

As a J traveller, I would see absolutely no reason to fly out of WSI. Problematic location, no lounges worth talking about (if any at all), very little else to get excited about. So affording it isn't part of the equation. It's basically just going to be a freight airport for the next xx years.

Yes, offload the LCC's to there from SYD (by mandate) and all is rosy, and I'm sure the regular SYD users would vote for that. I'd vote for that.

A lot depends on connections too. For us we despise transiting through SYD and my parents who live near Canberra are the same. If we don’t fly from ADL we prefer MEL and will only ever use SYD if we have an overnight stay. If connections from here were good at WSI I’d definitely use it as a transit airport and with no curfew hopefully it opens up some new services or slots

I'm in a similar boat. From HBA, I can really choose any from ADL, MEL or SYD as my Australian departure port. I avoid SYD whenever I can. I'd be happy to transit WSI and I think fares might be pitched to encourage that.

And @clifford , when you say no lounge to speak of (if any) - do you think that will always be the case?
