Wendouree allocations and general discussion

I'm being told by friends that deliveries to NSW have been occuring during the last 10 days.

Not good news for me then!

I did request some of the muscat and had hoped I'd be successful in that at least. Does anyone know if you get a "sorry but nothing this year" response from them at all?

Confirmed, my credit card was charged for 'WENDOUREE CELLARS CLARE AUS' on July 27.

Not yet delivered though.

And for those that have some from back vintages, I'm hearing directly from Wendouree that the 2010, 2011, and 2012 are drinking well now and were not necessarily designed to cellar for many decades as some of the previous vintages were.

Can I say I have been getting Wendouree for around 5 years now and they are sensational, I have been drinking them for years by virtue of my fiances father and they do get better, but there style has changes quite a bit.

The blends are my preference and just a quick tasting note for this year I had the 2013 Cabernet Malbec 2 nights ago and it is as good as any young wine I have ever tasted, that is including 100 point Bordeauxs, Grange, Hill Of Grace.

2011 is a drink now vintage 2012 is a keeper and 2013 i was told is more like 2011 but a lot bigger wine, just the elegance of the 2013 was beautiful and it backs up the saying "iron fist wrapped in a velvet glove"

I would love to hear what others think of the new vintage.

Welcome Simon, great first post.

As for tasting notes, I'll let let you know in a decade.

And I should have added...with a father like that, marry that girl!

If you have a few trust me they are worth a try at this stage, i would leave the straight Cab and straight Shiraz alone but the blends are very approachable, the whole stigma of they need a lot of time is not as much the case anymore.

Would be interested in hearing other peoples comments on any young Wendouree wines they have had.

It's not a matter of not trusting you. It's the fact that I have such a large volume of wine that I just can't get to these new ones for at least 5 to 10 years. There's just too many other great wines to be consumed first.

I acquired my first Wendouree wines this year and plan to try the blends to see what I like before next years order - I will post on the "Nice Wines thread" when I do. My review will be very basic though - I like it or I don't with some comments on what I think of the drinkability more than the descriptors like "saddle sweat" (JohnM) or grass, tar, dirt, beetle juice and the like

2011 is a drink now vintage

That's what I had been told as well. However after having tried the Shiraz/Mataro over the weekend I have to say that is is utterly wrong. It was way too young. Was crying out to be cellared for 10 or probably 20 years.

To those that have the 2011's I say don't listen to the people that are telling you to drink now. These will get so much better.

Oh right a certain A P BIRKS WENDOUREE appeared on my card statement. No idea what I've bought. Would be nice if they left me with a bottle of shiraz in there.

I bought a bottle of their 1997 shiraz, should I drink it soon-ish before it falls off the aging cliff?

It will be like opening a present on Christmas morning when you were a kid :)

I opened the 2013 Malbec and it was absolutely spectacular, beautiful drinking. I'm sure it will be fantastic with a few years under its belt but it will be difficult to keep it that long.

On the flip side, I tried the Shiraz Mataro last year and it was clearly too young, only started to open up after a few hours.

Indeed, when you get to my age there's not much that excites me in life anymore. Opening an aged Wendouree is a sheer pleasure.

Drink now. Send me the date/place and time when you plan to open it and I'm there :)

My Credit Card has just been charged. Now to just wait and see what I got.

So the charge is less than you both had on your orders? If it is the same you know exactly what you are getting....
