Welcome the Qantas 787's :)

My joy is that QF will have this aircraft. Discussions on the config are important, but secondary to my love of this aircraft.

Firstly, good on QF for getting some new planes but I don't understand what's so special about this aircraft.

I've flown short, medium and long haul routes on JQ & EY B787s and honestly didn't find anything special about them. While I'd rather fly them domesticity than on B737s, for longer international flights I'd prefer A380s or B747s (refurbished with new J suites).

Guess QF need to get some B747-8s or more A380s to get me excited :) (yes, I know it ain't gonna happen).

Agreed. I have flown EY's 787 which is 3-3-3, and it was just so much less comfortable than their A380. I hope that in the long term QF buys some 777-X or A350-1000 aircraft for their long haul routes, and uses the 787's on medium haul.

Lucky enough to have flown in 788 and 789. Not that you can tell any difference, really.

All of them on LAN/LATAM. 3 x in J and 1 x in Y.

The Y was LAX-LIM , a 3-3-3 config. It was fine, I thought. Except for the Peruvian family seated around me with incredible amounts of hand luggage. (seriosuly was a joke!)

Also done the AKL-SCL and return in J, which was very good. I like the plane, its quiet. Cabin has a more spacious feel. The take off roll is unusual. Very high pitched engine sound as it ramps up.

The window functions took some getting used to. Its quite spooky to wake up approaching SCL and through the window, it looks like a moonlight night. But when they turn the window shading down, you realise its a crystal clear sunny day.

The 787 is not quiet. The windows are annoying in direct sun when trying to sleep.

The A350 is just so much better.

Any new operators of the B777 will most likely be 10 across in Y. So you want the A330neo or A350 if you are travelling mostly in Y.

Can't agree more. Getting woken up by that bright green light at sunrise is unpleasant to say the least.

My only 787 flight was SCL-IPC on LAN. To be honest, it was just a plane - nothing really special or outstanding. I think the whole "Dreamliner" marketing thing was very effective and is mostly responsible for the reputation.

I would like to try one but will wait to see more of the safety record. How the lithium batteries etc are holding up??I am surprised that there are not more premium econo seats.I mean if you had a few less seats per row .......that means less meals ,drinks etc anyway plus higher fare but not over the top IMO it would be fairly well received. On long haul flights anyway.Even though we are not discussing the A380 more premo econo wouldn't go astray either (long haul flights).
As said luxury and all that is fine but at the end of the day I want to get there !!!

I don't mind the windows - but I detest when the crew lock them down unnecessarily.

I love the 787 - but it is seriously overrated and WAY too many people are like schoolgirls at a One Direction concert.

The aircraft is nowhere near as quiet and as comfortable as the 380 IMHO.

The 380 runs at the same cabin altitude as the 787 and is MUCH quieter, although I believe the 787 is better on humidity.

I don't notice the narrower seats myself - and the 787 is my 2nd fave aircraft - and as I've said many many times, I actually prefer to fly the UA 787 in Y compared to the QF 747 in Y. And I'll take a 787 over a 777 anyday. But - I'll take a 380 over every other aircraft any day of the week without question.

The 787 is a decent bird, and given the future is twins, there's nothing wrong with it.

But people need to calm the F#$% down over this way-overhyped aircraft as QF have in fact had them for years.

They just decided to keep the 767s and 747s flying longer than intended so they could prop up JQ's profitability by giving the 787s to them.

9 across in Y is a joke for ultra long haul on these birds

Whilst 9 abreast is certainly not fun on long haul, I believe that 9 abreast on the B787 is ahead of the A350 with its 9 abreast in terms of overall product & comfort.

As you have flown in Y on both the B787 and A350, what airlines are you comparing when you make the above statement?

I disagree.
I travelled on Finnair's A350 HKG > HEL in June in Y, i was lucky enough to snare of the extra leg room seats and the flight was easily one of the least comfortable I've ever been on. And let's remember this sector is by no means ultra long haul like sectors such as AUS > USA.

In Y, the A350 is far less appealing than the B787 IMHO.
The seat width on the A350 is 9 abreast also and Felt worse for comfort than the B787 with ridiculously hard seats with little recline.
The A350 lacks the tinted windows the B787 has and the cabin pressurisation on the A350 felt like being on an A320 or similar older aircraft.

Don't get me wrong, I despise 9 abreast on both the B787 and A350 in Y, as the seats are extremely narrow, although the A350 is really a bigger disappointment than the B787 in terms of Passenger comfort.

I have flown RJ 787 in economy and SQ A350 in economy. The difference, to me at least, is not noticeable.

I have 2 flights coming up on CX A350 but in premium economy. Should have tried one flight in economy but Asia Miles website not great with mixed class redemptions.

I have flown 9 across on the AC 787 across the Atlantic from LHR to YYZ and being a large guy I had no issue with my Y seat...it was certainly miles ahead of the (non-refurb) QF A330 I flew recently MNL-SYD where nothing worked and the seat felt like hard wood and wouldn't recline!

Out of interest, where was it published that QF are doing 3-3-3 on their 789? One would summise from the "luxurious" fitout that AJ espoused, that perhaps they would look at the 2-4-2 config to suit ultra-long-haul routes.

In that same speech where he used the "luxurious" word.

""There will be a big business class and a big premium economy cabin", and while the economy seats will be nine-across in a 3-3-3 arrangement, Joyce promises "we will be giving some very good seat pitch for economy seats given the the lengths we’ll be flying."" http://www.ausbt.com.au/qantas-ceo-promises-very-luxurious-boeing-787-configuration

Thanks for that, I must have read a different article which didn't mention it. If that is in fact the case, pitch is one thing, but there's nothing very luxurious about being boxed in around the shoulders. Let my points balance and bank account remain robust enough to ensure I am never down the back of their 789 then! :p
