Qantas Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights on sale by year's end - Australian Business Traveller

I can't wait to see/fly these new aircraft.

While Qantas were (due to number-crunching/ business decisions) "slow' to get these aircraft, I can see a long future for them. As per the article, many initial flights will be domestic. here in Colombia when Avianca introduced these aircraft, I was surprised (and delighted) to get them on short-haul routes. Chatting to staff revealed that these short flights were part of a training process for crew, so it is not a surprise that Qantas will do something similar.

Excellent :)

I'll make sure my first ever 787 flight next week does not colour my overall impression of the plane (especially as it's on...JQ...) until I've had a chance to experience QF's offering.

Flew SYD - HNL and HNL - SYD on JQ with Mrs coco in 1A and 1C both ways. Great seats! Bit hard to sleep on the outbound leg, but on HNL - SYD (daytime flight) the service was superb. Perhaps one of the best airline meals I've ever eaten (and I've travelled F on QF in an A380 from SYD - DXB). A great aircraft, the 787.

Its good to hear you had a great flight.
Of course I wonder how happy people in Economy will be if they were used to flying say an A380 or even a refurbished 747 and then transition to the 9 across 787.

9 across in Y is a joke for ultra long haul on these birds

I don't mind an airline being a little tardy with aquiring a new type of aircraft, always better to let the bugs be sorted by others.

That's my fear but the economy flight I had on RJ HKG-BKK wasn't too bad. Economy on the QF A330's and SQ A350's is roughly the same.

I'd like to see the routes first before commenting further.

I paid for it. I've had plenty of overseas travel in Y. Now is the time - as I am getting older - where I need some comfort when travelling. I am an age pensioner and have saved carefully for this degree of comfort. Maybe those in economy might aspire to travel in J or F one day. Or maybe cheap airfares are what they want. Anyway, I thought this thread was about QF getting 787s and how people felt about that - not about how people in economy felt.

Why isn't economy on the 787's just as important as your wish to travel business class?

A Y seat width and pitch similar to a 737.... I can certainly wait for that.

I can't say I had any particular issue with seat width on the JQ 787 in economy. Not sure of the configuration 3-3-3 or 3-4-3?

Because I have never travelled economy on a 787 and therefore I am not qualified to make a comment about that class of seating on that A/C type. Ask me about Y in a 767 and I can tell you.

3-3-3 in JQ Y. 3-3-3 is the higher density Y setup in the 787, with the 2-4-2 being the original intended layout.

that's ok - i am (have flown JQ 787), and it is abominable. a domestic configuration for long haul, hardly 'premium'

The 3-3-3 setup on AA 787's is woeful. I love the 787, but I hope they keep the 2-4-2 refurb Airbus' on PVG>SYD.

Ps. I never thought I would say that!

you naughty boy juddles ;), poking the bears on AFF:D. The 'sky is falling judges and juries' have already made their minds up on QFs yet to be released product/seating on the 787s:shock:. All the 'speculations'/'judgments' are good for a laugh though:D

It's not speculation. Qantas already decided on 9 abreast economy configuration on the 787. Everybody knows this is an awful configuration, same as 10 abreast 777s.

My joy is that QF will have this aircraft. Discussions on the config are important, but secondary to my love of this aircraft. 9 abreast in economy may not be what people want, but if that is what it takes to be able to offer the cheap opportunity to travel that QF needs to provide in the market, well so be it.

I am absolutely certain that if QF gave more space at a higher price, all those that complain about 9 across will fly another carrier anyway.
