Weight restrictions on Dash-8?

I know the Dash 8 flights have restrictions on check-in baggage weight, but...

I have to haul all of my scuba diving gear on a TSV-CNS flight to connect to an international flight. My dive bag weighs in around 30kg - this is unavoidable, I can't rent gear where I'm going. How strict are QF on the 23kg maximum on these Dash 8 flights? Is it worth giving them a call to let them know in advance? Otherwise I won't be flying at all, I'll have to drive it and leave my car at the airport for 2 weeks, and I'd prefer to avoid that.

Appreciate any advice :)

There are a few variables (is your domestic and international travel booked on the same ticket?), and options available (pre-purchased additional baggage or freight may be cheaper than 2 weeks parking?) in this scenario.

In case you haven't already seen this page, it may be a good starting point: Sporting Equipment | Qantas. Our 24/7 Reservations team on 13 13 13 would be happy to discuss this in more detail with you.

Hope this helps. :)

No, not on the same ticket. I've already booked the international flights, but can't book the domestic connections until I have confirmation I can actually check in a 30kg bag on the Dash 8. I was looking at: Checked Baggage Allowance | Qantas which says that the maximum allowed on the Dash 8 is 23kg for ALL destinations. It doesn't actually state that you can pay excess for going over or that you can get the sporting equipment allowance, just that they may not actually take your bag if you go over the 23kg limit. Not having my sporting gear on the same flight is going to be an unacceptable option for me under the circumstances :)

I'll give reservations a ring though. Thanks!

I see they've already been able to assist you via Twitter. It may be best to continue your conversation with them as they're the subject matter experts. :)

Next time you're at TSV Airport have a word the the QLink staff there who will be able to give you a clear picture of what happens. Although Qlink recognise your international or elite baggage allowances generally speaking any single item over 20kgs on a Dash8/Q400 operated flight is subject to weight restrictions ie they cannot guarantee uplift.

Some people may have already noticed a comment that pops up on the screen at the auto bag drop to that effect when checking in a heavy bag on a Dash8 operated flight.

I wouldn't necessarily expect reservations to understand what happens at the airport so they may think that all is fine and dandy only for you to discover a different scenario on the day. Ask the TSV Qlink staff if there's a local number for them you can ring the day prior so they can check the loadings of the flight & give you a more accurate answer as to whether your bag will definitely go with you on the flight.

I haven't had too many issues with heavy bags on the Dash 8. I was a regular on the PER-GET-PER flights and one time I took x3 bags that weighed around 25 to 30kg each.

Should be no problems between those ports. No issues with weight, only space. Generally there isn't a baggage overload between cairns and Townsville
