Water Levels Rising In Brisbane CBD

I live at West End, overlooking the river. Our power went off at 4am as the water started coming into some of the streets below. Fear it will be off for several days!

(I'm at work now - at least there's power here!!)

How are you mirroring the site successfully? Are you wget'ting the site constantly?

Using the mirror functionality in wget so that it only gets changed files.

wget keeps trying until it has fetched the changes. Once it has them, they're published to the central repository.

They then push out to the caching nodes around the world (it's a CDN - with POPs in 20 cities - so visitors hit the closest one).

I guess you mean on oxleys wharf. Bit hard as the iPhone app truncates the quotes. But I guess the Island is basically a flat deck barge so not much there to stop flow.
Yep Oxleys.

The Island I wouldnt want to see that float down the river, as it will give the Victoria Bridge a run for its money.

Most of the larger boats, including Kookaburra Queen and all the CityCat ferries, sought refuge at the mouth of the river, Moreton Bay and places like Manly yesterday. Not sure why The Island stayed behind.

Indeed. Hopefully it will just sink in it's current location rather than drifting away. It was always a pathetic party boat, and tbh it won't be missed!

Oh it will be missed, if not by those that had some memories then at least by the abundance of bogan suckers in this city which still derive some pleasure from something so cheesy.

In the midst of all that water there is apparently a fire at Suncorp stadium,an electricity generator has caught fire and firefighters are attempting to gain access to put it out.

I'm a little surprised they haven't scuttled the island if they've decided it's better to sink it.

Singapore Air has put up a notice on their website giving status information (currently all normal) for anyone else with SQ flights in the next few days.

Wish I had a fresian cow at the moment, it would be a win win with the grass the way it is and no milk, at least the bread maker has come out of retirement after I found a good recipe on Whirlpool of all places .

Out of curiousity, has anyone seen details on the ADF aviation assets being deployed? They seem to be talking about black hawks, sea kings, and C-130s, but not about any CH-47s or C-17s. Did see some video of a CH-47, but it could have been file footage.

Seems like any Chinooks they could get to any of the flooded areas would be worth their weight in gold for supply delivery and any large scale evacuations! Even if their landing on water party trick seems impractical...

How about a free cupcake :D:D Brumby's | Facebook

I took my voucher to Brumbys and after walking past the female customer who was freaking out over no bread I smiled at the staff, told them it's my birthday and showed them the voucher. They told me they were out of cupcakes so I told them they ruined my birthday. They gave me a six pack of chocolate chip cookies as an apology.

That info is out of date, there is now 8 black hawks and 5 C130Js added this morning to the sea kings and 7 black hawks that were flat chat yesterday. The RAAF only has 4 C17s (at least one and I believe possibly 3 are OS) and they are not really that good for flood ops given the runways they need, while the army only has 6 chinooks with some tasked overseas and one in TSV now on standby.

Looks like the Moggill ferry might become target practice for the defence forces.

Thanks Markis. Must be a few chinooks unavailable (as you say, could be overseas - think I remember hearing about 1 or 2 in Afghanistan?), unfortunately.

The C-17 is short field by the standards of heavy lift, surely there's somewhere up north they can fly into! Although having said that, hopefully there's cheaper ways of getting supplies in.

Anna Bligh just mentioned in a news conference that are investigating destroying The Island in place. That'll be an interesting job for someone. The Moggill ferry is in danger of breaking loose too, apparently (although I only caught half of that announcement).

Ok. I'll go back to yelling DUSTOFF everytime a chopper goes overhead.
