Was I right or wrong?

imo you should have tried to ignore your obese neighbour by bringing out the iPad2 and playing episodes of The Biggest Loser. Oh and dont use your headphones, just use the internal speakers for sound output.

I once saw a man who required a seatbelt extender in the exit row on DJ, and they got him to move seats for takeoff and landing.

Ha! Would they also have asked him to move seats in an emergency?

Not selfish at all. If there is a flab overflow and the flabber is travelling with family then they should suffer. Not an innocent fellow traveller.

Unless she was unusually asymmetrical, presumably she was also overflowing onto her husband already, so he was most likely already suffering :)

A couple of years ago I faced the same situation. I arrived at my aisle seat to find a morbidly obese bloke in the midle seat and his tiny kid in the window seat. I politely asked if he would mind swapping with his kid and he refused. These people **** me no end! I didn't do anything about it but I will probably speak to a FA it it happens again.

Fortunately I now usually have a completely invisible passenger next to me on most flights. To me that is one of the best benefits of status.

When I was a POS I was acutely aware of my size and tried to limit my intrusion on other people's space.

ejb, ditto on the when I was a POS, and on being awar and limiting intrusion.

I don't know about you, but it is so much better flying now, not being large

It is a whole new world of comfort.

Being able to breathe while eating is amazing.

Also the fact I can relax and not worry about the person next to me feeling squashed. I travel in J to prevent annoying people but even then it was tight.

I too fly J for this reason, but not possible on a B717

I had to avoid routes without enough room so i would drive instead on those trips. All good now though.

you were right to ask her to swap with her husband, I was faced with the same sort of problem on a MEL-LHR, the gentleman was in one word "massive" and intruded on my space all the way to SIN. I asked nicely during the flight if he could lean on his other armrest to disperse some of the load this was to no avail. On the SIN-LHR route I swapped seats with my brother and he's big bugger and he kindly stuck in some elbows which were quite effective apparantly.
