no one has been able to give concrete examples where CC insurance falls short, in terms of benefits, of those offered by a paid policy.

CC insurance will often only cover you for a specific period, regardless of the length of your trip. If you buy a paid policy you have to tell them the length of your trip and they give you cover accordingly. With CC insurance you might assume you are covered, and then get a nasty surprise that actually your CC policy was only valid for x weeks out of your y month long trip.

I admit that this is really a problem with people not reading their policy and not understanding what they are covered for, rather than with the policy itself. But hey, that's why most people have problems with insurance policies and it doesn't stop them complaining that it's the insurer's fault ;)

I think that's a big thing, Anna. People do not read the PDS for policies they are buying (and in effect you are buying one through CC insurance). It's up to people to research and then choose the best company/policy for their needs.
The OP's issue seemed to be more that the emergency number provided by ACE as underwriter for WOW CC insurance was incorrect and he could not find a current one.
Reminds me of being in the UK with a friend quite a few years back. She discovered that her multi-debit card of the time (cheque or savings) had defaulted to the account with a low balance. She had taken money out around the place with no hassles but got into London and no money left in account. She rang the number on the card (large bank) - it was incorrect!

People can have the same problems with paid policies. If you don't know what you are covered for.......

Breaking a leg from falling down stairs when drunk

For me it is horses for courses, but the right CC TI is often more than adequate.

Returning to Australia , I have decided not to pursue the issue.
Why ?
Well there seems little if anything to gain personally or financially , by pursuing the card provider or the underwriter.

I carried my injury through the latter stages of my trip , and completed the most important items of my itinerary.
My injury ( an ankle ligament ) is expected to heal up ok with rest.

In my case , the holiday was active and adventurous and a better quality insurance policy would have been more appropriate.

My original comments stand : The insurer failed comprehensively meet the obligations of the policy.
To that end , I entreat others who may be considering using this particular card insurance to make a carefully considered decision.

Just in case people aren't aware - apparently The Checkout are going to have a look at travel insurance in tonight's episode (may already be up in ABC iview). If nothing else should be a few laughs in it for the viewers.

Does anyone know whether this CC policy covers scuba diving?

Depends on which CC.

ANZ and Westpac do not exclude scuba diving if you have an open water licence or are supervised by a qualified/registered instructor.

Other policies both CC and paid may be similar.

The PDS exclusions section will clarify.

If you have a scuba event, youre most prob going to need to be low level evac to a decompression unit but O2 at a min with medical consult.

Dont risk it on a freebie that might decline the claim based on activity: DAN Divers Alert Network Asia-Pacific : Membership and Insurance Coverage for Scuba Diving

DAN - Divers Alert Network. If you need them, and Ive been the person on the ground handing an emergency, they know what you need and have the contacts to the after hours medical units where you need them plus follow up when (if) you get home.

So I read the many pages of PDS and it says "not included" is cave diving, which we won't be doing.
So I don't know whether that means normal scuba diving is included. I will probably have to ring and if they say it is included but not in writing in the PDS, how much would I be trusting them.

Hmmm I must have been posting at the same time as you Denali. We will have to look in to it. Thanks for the link.
