Some pretty amazing figures here, while the future fund is a headline with its 51K per member in international airfares over three years, the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism is something of a standout both in terms of its figures and its openness on the matter!

Meanwhile, the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism has budgeted almost $10,000 per person on international airfares alone. But the reasons for this travel remain a mystery - its communications officer, Heath Axelby, declined to account for the travel arrangements.

''The department has no obligation to respond to your request,'' he said.
Overall, defence outlays the most in international airfares. Its three-year budget, including for the Defence Materiel Organisation, which manages the procurement of weapons and supplies, was $188 million. It is followed by DFAT ($64.8 million), the Australian Federal Police ($36.8 million) and the Department of Immigration ($27 million).
The Bureau of Meteorology has budgeted for $6.1 million worth of international travel and the Australian Bureau of Statistics has set aside more than $3 million for overseas travel.

that's really only one international J fare plus hotel plus incidentals per year. for the size of their budget they aren't trying hard enough.

And its an average rate dont forget. I'm sure the departmental admin clerks don't get those trips..

Note the article is saying airfares, not travel in total, at 10000 PER employee, even the tea lady is doing a DONE4!

OK, I'm in. If my only KPI is deliver the tea at 9:30am, 12:30 and 3pm I can do that..except when I'm on the Done4.

Hmmm, i'm obviously in the wrong Govt department...

The feds probably do get a lot more of these lurks and perks, but i just can't find it in me to drag myself to the chilly mornings and isolation of Canberra to benefit from them, and its where most of the depts i'd be interested in working at are based...

I've seen the Qantas price listing that my Department can purchase full Y and J fares; by domestic city and international destinations. Let's just say the discount from their advertised fare rates are 'substantial'. You don't get FF points, just status credits. Not sure what fare class they book into.

There is now competitive tendering for all air travel, and departments must now accept the lowest fare of the day offered to them. While Qantas was always the norm for international travel, colleagues have recently been travelling Etihad and Qatar to Europe.
