Hi folks,

My significantly better looking half was supposed to be traveling from Melbourne to the UK yesterday (Monday 19th April) on Cathay to attend a friend's wedding on Saturday 24th April.

You may have heard a whisper or two about a minor hiccup with the European airspace?

Anyway, after finally getting through to the Cathay call centre, the flight details have been changed to this Friday however the HKG - LHR leg status is "waitlisted". The other 3 legs of the return journey are "confirmed".

Does this mean that she might get to Hong Kong only to find that there is not a seat available on the plane for her? Would she know before flying out from MEL what the situation was?

Obviously if the EU airspace remains closed this "waitlisted" situation may not be an issue at all...

Thanks for your input.

There is a chance waitlisted sectors could become confirmed at the last minute due to no shows.

However she will more than likely know what is happening before departing MEL.

That is exactly what it means. Waitlists can clear at any time, but it depends how many people are on the waitlist and how many have a higher priority in the queue. CX have multiple flights per day, so she could request to be waitlisted on multiple options. Its quite possible she may not have a confirmed seat when departing MEL.
