Hi - seeking guidance from those more experienced than I am in travel to/from the US. I am joining a tour in the US later this year, dates should be around 7-21 Nov in-country. The tour commences in NYC and ends in Dallas.

While I wait for exact start/finish dates I have been looking into flights. I have never done an RTW trip and think this could be an opportunity to do so. I will be departing BNE, don't have any decent status with any FF program, only Qantas silver with a paid-up Qantas Club membership as a leftover from a former job.

I will be able to book flights from the start of August as I will know the detailed itinerary then.

Any suggestions for an RTW trip into NYC and exiting Dallas? Or is direct out of BNE better, if so, who is best to go with now?

For pricing and a relatively simple itinerary the Finnair and Lufthansa round the world tickets are a very good option. These are different from the OneWorld and Star alliance round the world type of tickets that people mostly know about. There is a thread running on The Finnair and Lufthansa RTWs currently which I suggest you look at.

Assume you are looking at a cash paid ticket. Class of travel? RTW gives you a lot of opportunities.
Star Alliance & Oneworld Alliance (QF, BA, AA etc) have RTW products. Can be good/reasonable value compared to alternatives.
QF have/will have DFW-SYD/MEL non stop flights. Which are a subtle different from direct flights. But a non-stop flights is also a direct flight.

Have a look at:

The Finnair fare could be suitable for you and may well be cheaper or the same price as just booking BNE-JFK/DFW-BNE.

With a Finnair ticket you could fly (for example):

BNE-SIN on Qantas
SIN-HEL-OSL on Finnair
OSL-HEL-JFK on Finnair
DFW-SYD-BNE on Qantas

The European stopover does not have to be Oslo - it can be pretty much anywhere that Finnair flies to. You can also add an optional free stopover in Helsinki en-route to somewhere else in Europe, and do a surface sector in Europe (e.g. fly into Rome and out of Vienna) if you want to.

Thanks @Mattg I think that might work well! A random day or two stopover in Europe on the way would be fun. Off to check out Finnair and where they go from HEL.
