Virus Outbreak on Cruise Ship

Being stuck with a bunch of strangers on a ship for days, let alone weeks, sounds like a nightmare. Maybe it’s an old ppl thing

I'm with you! I wouldn't be stuck on board a ship for days, let alone weeks, for quids. That's why all the cruises I go on have excursions off the boat morning and afternoon, or all day if in a port :) . Zodiacs in Antarctica and the Arctic and Greenland!

As for old - hey, who are you calln' old? 🤣 🥳

<<boomy and I know each other very well>>

I know you’re not a typical cruise person and you’re definitely not old 😂 we actually got to talk about cruising last time we cough up when I told you about my parents (who are old) and their experience cruising from Miami to the Caribbean which sounded like a nightmare to me. Reminds me it’s been a while between drinks, let me know next time you’re in town.

For those that don't like being in a largish meeting of strangers for a few hours because o the risk of infection avoid Michelin starred restaurants?
Just a reminder.
Was said to be over 500 cases of novovirus and with far fewer strangers than a large cruise ship. It wasn't the only Michelin starred restaurant to have such an outbreak. Another was Dinner by Heston.

Of course an example from Melbourne.
90 out of 300 infected.

Pls remind me again exactly what date first passenger died in this cruise?

And what date were all pax finally offloaded?

And in between those dates were all pax confined to their own personal cabins / rooms or whatever they call them on a ship?

This is worse than being on the ship!

"Minister for Health Mark Butler said three NSW residents, two Queensland residents and a New Zealand resident would be quarantined at the Bullsbrook Centre for National Resilience in Perth’s northeast for at least three weeks."

Do love the truly dystopian names we chose for these facilities....

Seriously:

* Person gets infectcted with a serious virus in Argentina

* Boards ship and virus spreads

* Sevaral fatalities for this virus

* Situation stabilised by on-board isolation and medial treatment

* Pax offloaded when conditions allowed / evac from Tenerife arranged (Australia, as usual, the last to arrange this).

So, what's your worry? People were stuck on the ship for a long time? FFS! Are you worried that if you take a cruise you may also be inconvenienced by an involuntary long stay on board? Really? - people have died, ya know. A rare (amongst humans) disease which exhibited unusual transmissivity killed some people. Inconvenience I think is the least of concerns. YMMV.

Have fun.

You nailed it Rooey - the inability to get off any ship at any time is the reason I will never take a cruise - each to his own huh?

Sure, but your way of demonstrating that point that was pretty carp. But hey, tell me - can you get off an aircraft at any time? 🤣 If someone's coughing their guts up in the seat or suite next to you, do you step out?

I dunno what happened on that cruise you took, but I imagine it would be like me taking a single flight, having a really bad experience (and such are ... not uncommon??) and declare 'I'm never going to take a flight again!". But you do you.

Crickey - ask 3 simple questions and you get kicked to death
No, it wasn’t the simple questions. It was the uninformed premises therein.

But to your key gripe. The inability to get off the ship at any time. I mean, why would you want to? That’s not what you do cruises for. Like my me saying I’d never go on a flight because they won’t let me look out the front window. Or that I’d never go on the Ghan train because I couldn’t get off at every little town and settlement.

However, if you do need to leave a cruise, with the vast majority of them, you can leave the next day when it’s in a port. On my recent two cruises, I could’ve got off and left the cruise on any day. Heck, even in Greenland I could’ve left the ship on any day! No, not in the middle of the night when we’re cruising between ports - I admit that’s a limitation. If you’re cruising across the Atlantic Ocean, then yes, you’re stuck for the duration. That’s not a cruise I’d ever want to do either.

I guess I’m passionate about this is because I used to hold much the same views – I knew I would never, ever be seen dead on a cruise ship for much the same reasons as we’ve heard here. However I realised that I’d have to give it a go to really find out, so I did. I took a nice safe cruise from Darwin to Broome down the Kimberley Coast and it was absolutely stunning and magnificent.

I took my first few cruises on small boats, under 200 passengers. I said I’d hate to go on one of those multi thousand passenger monsters but again I went and actually found out for myself and joined an AFF cruise Sydney Hobart Sydney. Yes, didn’t like it, take that type of cruise off the list.

So, seven small boat cruises later and five more booked, I’m quite content in having been able to visit Antarctica, the Arctic, Greenland, the Caribbean, and island hop around the Canary Islands in style and comfort. If someone doesn’t want those sort of experiences, then sure, cruising is not for them.

End of rant

Apparently the government chartered plane failed to arrive in Tenerife to beat the deadline, so the Australian passengers and one NZ passenger have been taken to the Netherlands in the meantime, and the government chartered plane now has to go to the Nerherlands to pick them up, then fly 48 hours back to the Perth prison, I mean quarantine facility. What an ordeal! I really feel for them....
