I'm booked on VA827 MEL-SYD this Thurs (Oct 16). Seat was booked via Amex as a free Plat Edge flight approx. a week ago. According to the Amex itinerary, it's booked into E class.

I'm Velocity Red. My velocity number is in the booking. I'm the only person on the booking.

Just tried to select seats during check-in on the mobile website on my iphone - row 11 middle is the best seat I can select.

However, if I do a dummy booking for the same flight, I can select row 7!

It appears the fact that it is now a Flexi fare, rather than a saver, is providing better seats!

I wonder if this is because we're past T-80.

If I do a dummy booking with no VFF # I can get row 7. When I add in my FF# it gives me up to row 5.

Ive previously found during the 48 hours before the flight that seat selection through MMB gives better seats than through check-in.

What's the significance of T-80?

Now that it's within T-24, I can select row 9 during check-in, but row 5 doing a dummy booking!

I can't see your status (on mobile site), but I assume it's higher than my Red!

Interesting. Just checked and MMB gives the same seat selection as check-in (row 9).

T-80 likely has little significance in specific relation to travel on VA - it is a qantas (or maybe amadeus) thing.

With VA is more like around the time on line check-in opens that you may need to consider.

With VA is more like just before chrch-in opens that you may need to consider.

That's what I thought! It seams that as it gets closer to the flight time, VA allow you to select seats closer to the front.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Certainly blocks of seats are reserved for different levels of travellers based on fare class and frequent flyer status.

As the flight becomes closer more seats will open up for those in the lower ranks (Saver Lite, Saver, Red etc).

If they didn't do that it would be a race every day to get row 3 etc etc.

If you like emergency exit rows but don't mind that you have no recline feature row 13 on the 737-800s will usually be available at the airport through a check-in/lounge/gate agent.

At 6'9", my plan is to ask at The Lounge for an exit row seat.

My flight is actually on a 737-700 (didn't think they had them anymore!), so row 10 is exit row.

When I last booked a Plat Edge flight a few months ago I asked if they could select a seat for me (expecting they couldn't) but Amex booked me straight into row 3 (as WP). So worth asking at booking what seat they can get you (but probably only far back as Red I would imagine).
