Sure can, will be early next week.
The refusal reason they've given doesn't make sense- something about a previous account in default (Never!! And their collections dept have confirmed that.) I suspect they have just said something rather than nothing and instead it relates to too many applications. Also could be that I've held a similar card too recently?

Sigh.
I was going to take a break from applications after this one anyway as the min spend is so high: the only way we'd make it is to bring some expenses forward. Now I'll need to take a break with no benefit!

A week later, and I am approved!!

Not sure what changed, but they probably wouldn't tell me even if I asked. Now to reach that minimum spend!

Nice one I just applied myself and waiting on approval. Hope i get approved also.

Good news. My card arrived in mail yesterday - 6 calendar days from approval to receiving card.

For anybody who's had the card for more than 1 month:

Is there a way to keep track of which spend is not eligible to count towards the $3k/mo required for bonus points during the month online? Or is it a surprise come statement time? Obviously the safest is to just assume anything remotely related to the exclusions that they list is not included, but their list is far from complete..

I couldn't edit my above post to add the below. I contacted Virgin Money to ask when my statement date would be and got this reply:

"We advise that your account billing cycle is every 12th of the month. In
this regard, your initial statement will be generated on 12 November
2017.

On the other hand, we advise that you will earn 40,000 points per month
for three months (from account opening date which is 11 October 2017)
when you spend $3,000 on your credit card. Kindly note that no cut off
date is set per month provided you meet the purchase requirement for
three months."

Thanks Arrow- but what does the bolded part mean? As long as you hit $9k in 3 months it's ok? Not sure I understand.

I don't understand either! Was hoping somebody else would haha.

What you said is my impression; I have messaged them back to clarify.

Addit: Their reply didn't clear anything up, unfortunately:

"We confirm that you will receive 120,000 points over the three months
period of the promotion provided you spend $3,000 on eligible
transactions."

Applied. Have some renovations to do so will hit $3k/month no problem. Just hope the new card comes soon.

Rather intrigued now on what is excluded.
  1. Got my first statement (I'm on the Flyer) and I'd spent $1935 for the month.
  2. Received my 20k points + 1175 Virgin points.
  3. So, 1175 * 1.5 (1/0.66..) = 1762.5
  4. Difference of $172.5. Take the $64 Annual fee out and I have $108 to find.
  5. Removing anything over $108 and any combination of the same item i.e 3 Coles comes to $127 only leaves a few items.
  6. Cannot for the life of me strike a combination to match $108 (or thereabouts) with the remaining handful of transactions.
Will give them a buzz tomorrow to find out - anybody else work out some logic?

Cheers

Ha, I expect this card will drive us all crazy!

I think the points earn might be staggered so maybe your maths is off enough to hide the mystery transaction? 2/3 of a point per dollar is only for the first $1500 and then it drops to 1 point per $2? Or am I thinking of another card??

Keen to know what was the non earner though!

Your maths is slightly off due to the monthly capping on points they use, you only get the .66 points on the the first $1500 in a month after that it's only .5 points
So $1500*.66=990 points. Then 1175-990 is 185 points earned at .5 so around a $370 spend is what your looking for. This checks out with your total too $1500+$370+$64=$1934

Thanks Radio8tiv, I must have missed the $1500 capping - that explains that then, so all good.

That all said however, I did find a minute to ring them up today and explained my maths (I hadn't read your replies whilst at work until just now). The guy on the other end didn't have an answer for me - he clearly also didn't know about the capping or possibly that and was in the too hard basket, so just credit 200 Velocity point to my account to get transferred next months sweep. Perhaps it was easier for him to do that rather than get to the bottom of it.

pfft ... got knocked back for this card today. who knows what citibank magic algorithm determined that one! have held this and other citibank cards before. anyway can't be bothered dealing with citi customer service so opted for HSBC qantas card instead - approved instantly. go figure.

Not a bad outcome!

Anyone sure what a "new customer" is for Virgin Money? I held a card a year or so back.

I had a quick read of the t&c's and all I could determine was that new customers are not existing customers, I couldn't see any waiting periods. I'm also keen to know if anyone can confirm?

Did any of you end up applying for the card? And did you get the points?

I can see the T&Cs indeed don't mention a waiting period, but it would be useful to know of prior success!

I applied, but won't get my first statement till mid next month.

Sadly the Virgin Money website and information layout has to be the most useless i have ever encountered. No real way of getting any real time information.

Has anyone gone for the balance transfer? From the terms and conditions it seems like cheque-to-self is available?

Also does anyone know what happens with repayments if you do a balance transfer and then spend on the card to get the bonus points? For example, if you go for the lower value card and spend ~1500 in a month then pay it off, is that 1500 going towards the spend or the balance transfer first?

edit: nevermind, the establishment fee is 3%

Can I get bonus points for applying Citi Bank credit card if I have this Virgin credit card?

Thanks anyhow PDog! I've just applied as well, will see how it goes... might call them and double check with them as well, once the application goes through.
