Virgin Blue perception

10 Years on im surprised DJ doesn't yet have a pre-recorded Safety Demonstration they play? It would be an easy way to eliminate such jokes, and place a more serious tone on Safety onboard.

Even if they didn't want to get ride of the light heartedness which DJ pride themselves on, they could easily have a pre-recorded demo and state that "we need to be serious for a minute."

I have to admit I didn't mind the light heartness of the DJ FA's, and I do believe there are some QF FA's who could take a lesson or two from DJ... That said, I think there does need to be a happy medium on longer flights...

Given time, the "flying circus" perception will disappear.
DJ is gearing up to go "head to head" with QF for the business travel $ and I am sure, cabin behaviour will reflect. I am in agreeance that a happy medium has to be struck between good humour and pleasant customer service and a "flying circus" attitude, which, under the "guidance" of the Borgehetti winds of change, will be achieved.

The fun can be saved for the holiday $ tourist which will be fought out between JQ and TT, itself another interesting topic for a post.

How is the grammar?????????????

I checked in (very early) and asked if there was possibility of move to an earlier flight (I have zero status with DJ and was on a cheap Go fare) totally expecting to get a lecture like you do sometimes from QP dragons when you're cheeky enough to ask for a possible forward loading change on a Red E Deal.

Several times I've actaully been offered and accepted to moving a red-e-deal flight to an earlier one, so not really an issue and never had a lecture about it.

I prefer DJ as I am mainly a leisure traveller. I have silver status and am a Lounge member.
Flew Melbourne to Brisbane return on the weekend and both were on time. FAs haven't really done the jokey stuff for quite a while now, but I never minded it to be honest.
DId OLCI and got seat 4D for the trip up, but was put in seat 29D on the return leg, with two screaming children in separate rows in 29 and 31. Flight was chockers.

As I was disembarking once again got warm thanks from FA for helping out(as well as from mum).
No joking on this sector-but again it has never bothered me.

What time did you fly? I flew out from BNE at 9am from Gate 47, and the BNE-MKY flight at that time was cancelled from Gate 49 (I think). Glad you didn't get caught out on that one.

Some flyers hate f/a cracking jokes and then some flyers love those jokes - I happen to fall into the latter category. Sure some announcements esp. those initial safety demonstration are very important but, this is the big but, is that you will see (what appears to be frequent flyers and others) who totally IGNORE those safety demo's and think their personal discussion / in-cabin meeting etc is more important than knowing what to do in an emergency.

So yes, please DJ crack a joke, and try to get people's attention rather than a monotomous safey demonstration which IMO alot don't bother paying attention to in any instance.

I've never seen one instance where cracking a joke during the safety demo has resulted in someone who doesn't normally watch the demo watch it. People who find their own conversation infinitely more important don't tend to interrupt it for anything.

Cracking jokes however can and does upset nervous flyers who are looking for the crew to instill confidence in them.

I'm always partial to a bit of good humour, if done well. This happens on rare occasions (and have heard some very funny announcements made on both QF & DJ), but unfortunately in a lot of cases the humour can be so bad it makes you cringe. It's an art, just because someone can crack a few jokes at the pub with a few mates doesn't always translate well to a crowd of 180. Better to err on the side of caution.

Yes this. A lot of jokes over the PA I've heard are laden with marginally offensive content that's totally inappropriate.

Jokes can be fine if you hear them occassionally, and for the infrquent traveller, it isprobably neither here or there. I've had the odd QF flight where the odd joke or two has popped into the PA announcements.

For the frequent traveller, they can grow old pretty quick, and thus while it ok sometimes, I think generally, they are best avoided.

I disagree. In fact I think the opposite is true. I know quite a few nervous flyers and they all find the lightheartedness of the FAs more reassuring than not. It instills confidence in the passenger that the FA is completely relaxed about the flight ahead.

I'm with Justinf on this one...

Appropriate
Light hearted humour can often put peoples nerves at ease. Obviously making fun of first time flyers is not a good way to relax their nerves, but making a quick joke which basically enforce "we've done this 1000 times before, there is no reason this time will be any different" will actually go along way toward calming pax...

The other thing is that the jokes must be natural... There is nothing worse than a person touting the company joke if they don't believe it or if they don't think it's funny, and they can't be "in" jokes, where if you're not "in" what ever the subject is then you won't understand the joke.

Of course this may be mute as DJ are changing their brands to be the next Ansett. (The successful part at least)

Getting back on topic... I'm much like the OP, and my company was given 2 "free accelerations to Velocity Gold" as a reward to shifting some of our spend to DJ, and I've taken up one of them. So I now find myself as a DJ elite as well as QF WP, and need to think about whether I use it or not.
Reasons I haven't in the past include:
- the check in nightmare etc & no lounge access- now addressed through OLCI and my Gold status. (although this only softens the blow of SYD T2 compared to T3)
- too many delays (but that is going back a while)
- I find the customer service annoying. Not so much the jokes, but 2 of the last 3 times I've flown DJ I've had FA's (both male) lean on the back of my seat to have long friendly chats with the pax behind me & ignore other pax around them. Last one continually bumped my seat in the process & then got shirty when I asked him to stop.
- no J class
- cant (as far I know) use points to upgrade to Y+ seats. My companies travel policy is no J tickets but I can use points to upgrade, so this is a big factor if flying to PER or DRW

I do like the DJ planes and I do like VA. If DJ are getting more reliable and more professional I'd be tempted to give it a go & maybe shift my OS travel to VA. If only I could upgrade on those longer domestic flights though.

My Dad often referred to a latin phrase when we were growing up which in English translates to "better to remain silent and to be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt."

soemone mentioned the annoyance of cabin crew leaning on the seats talking to other pax.
damn annoying isn't it that they are doing their job and being the face of the company.......to the miserable faces more often than not in the cabin.........
damn annoying also when the pax in front drops the seat back during meal service to the annoyance of his fellow pax..........
damn annoying when the pax wants a whizz just as the trolley dollies get going
damn annoying isn't it!

want luxury - charter your own jet!!!

Interesting that he would quote it in Latin. The modern version of the quote, pretty much as you note it, it attributed to Abraham Lincoln or Mark Twain. However, these seem to be derivations from the Bible book of Proverbs (Proverbs 17:28). So I wonder if his Latin version was from Proverbs rather than the Lincoln/Twain version?

I'm another who hadn't been on DJ for years. Had a flight earlier this year, and didn't really enjoy it for three reasons:

1. No lounge access
2. Was sat next to someone who I'm supect is going to grow up to be a serial killer. (Not DJ's fault, but all part of the experience)
3. The headrest part of the seat was flat. It was an early morning flight, so when I took a nap, there was nothing to hold my head up and it lolled to the side while I was asleep - had a sore neck for a couple of days afterward.

Mostly I'll try to avoid travelling DJ, however I'm going on a group trip next month and we are booked on DJ for one of the legs, so I'll see how I go this time.
