Virgin Australia says it hopes to offer in-flight entertainment via wi-fi to passengers by the middle of next year.

Australia's number two carrier said on Thursday it was working with Lufthansa Systems to deliver movies, television programs and music via wi-fi to personal hand-held devices or laptops.

Virgin group executive product and guest services Martin Daley said Virgin and Lufthansa Systems had signed a letter of intent to produce and install the system, known as BoardConnect, from mid-2012.
