You are exactly right Karen. But I've never really understood the desire for those domestic business seats. (unless of course someone else is picking up the tab) Stretching out in the row 3 seats, with a full tummy thanks to lounge-grazing isn't really too removed from the seats ahead, across the magnetic divide. (and the wallet bulge is always the most measureable difference - certainly the only relevant factor to yours truly). I did pick up a J ticket BNE-MEL once (on a $89 sale purchase last year). Flight was chockers - they had staff that had to get on that flight, myself and 2 other Plats were moved from row 3 into J. Nice surprise, had a bonus meal - but still arrived at the same time, still walked into the Melbourne rain pretty much the same person.
But at the end of the day, as you imply, you have to work it all into your personal budget, your own set of needs and priorities, and just hope you keep yourself balanced and humble, so you can keep tripping along the following year.
