Virgin Australia Financially Secure? [Now in Voluntary Administration]

SQ miles expire in THREE YEARS – 36 months. You can’t take one award trip in 3 years????

The current award charts and current rates are there to see – and book flights now for later year using CURRENT levels.

SQ are part of a genuine global network, and their award miles can be used on all Star Alliance partners – many partners in conjunction on one long haul flight if you wish, and get creative as I always am. The world is truly your oyster using them. :D

Many Virgin only flyers think exotic flight awards run to Darwin, Hobart, Hong Kong/Haneda (gasp!) or Christchurch etc, and that is near the full gamut!

I’ve used Star Alliance Miles in recent times for award flights in the pointy end to visit Lhasa Tibet, Windhoek Namibia, Whitehorse in the Yukon, Madagascar, The Faroe Islands, Tirana Albania, Luang Prabang Laos, Cape Town, St. John’s Newfoundland, The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Montevideo Uruguay, Tripoli in Libya, Cyprus, Puerto Rico, Kunming China, Baku Azerbaijan, Fairbanks Alaska, Boa Vista Brazil, Cuzco Peru, Jamaica, Addis Ababa Ethiopia etc, and scores of other very expensive places to access, if via paid tickets. All paid with miles.

Star Alliance awards have gigantic flexibility, if used wisely. :D
WOW! That is impressive, I, not only wonder how one accumulates that many points but also wonder about the ATO interest.

Redeemed my 280k points through VA for a return trip in J to Europe end of November on SQ.

Risky that SQ will be flying by then? Very

Risky that VA could go under and not honor ticket? Yes

Better to risk this than buying 12 toasters that may never arrive? HELL YES

Buy lots of lottery tickets as those 280K are gone methinks. Unless you cancel the ticket, and buy a few toasters or hair dryers with the proceeds. THOSE are guaranteed! (Well as much as anything funded by Virgin points is ''guaranteed'' today)

Virgin will not be operating July 1, much less November IMHO.

SQ are not going to fly you free I'd guess just as you are a nice guy. Will SQ be flying November - HELL YES - but not flying folks for which SQ have not been paid.

Had you moved the points to Kris Flyer, you would be sitting in the pointy end of an SQ A380 in November. :D

I missed out on the gift card option but I got a brand new IPad as something I wanted too...

Based on the the tread title.... I would say the answer without additional funding is definitely ...

NO!

Totally agreed with you as from the posts on the redemption of miles... I hesitate to say they might even last 6 months

I‘ll take my chances. Currently showing a confirmed seat and ticketed booking. Must note I’m also SQ gold which may help my chances if any issues arise.

Having to deal with toasters and hair dryers just seems “pointless” at this stage.

And I missed the news and/or recommendations about transferring points to KF. Many sites (point hacks) I’m following did not highlight the immediate need for this.

I'm leaving my points with Velocity but then I am used to taking risks. But then I also didn't rush out and buy toilet paper and just lived on the edge with one roll left.

Any correlation to toilet paper hording and early transferring miles to KF, I wonder?!

Back on topic.

Appears VA has cranked up a social media campaign to call for help from the government.

This is a move away from their usual fluff advertising pieces in wider media.

" A monopoly in Australian skies will be good for no one. Not the 25 million people who fly with Virgin Australia. Not our 10,000 incredible people, or the 600,000 people who work in tourism. Not the Australian economy, to which we add $11 billion a year. Even our biggest competitors need a challenger to keep them honest and innovative"

Desperate times calls for desperate measures?

I'm also looking into booking, but for Jan/Feb.

I'd prefer if someone like Wesfarmers just goes ahead and buys them out.

I wont be surprised if it is desperate measure.. without the money... this airline could be wound up in months..

Why buy Virgin when at today's prices you could almost as easily buy Qantas?

May arguably be easier to pick up the remains of VA at a 'liquidation sale' hosted by administrators rather than bid for QF at the current market environment.

One big issue for Qantas.. the most profitable part for them is NOT the flying division... hasn't been for a LONG time.. the most profitable part is the frequent flyer loyalty scheme... I think Qantas will have more money in the bank than Virgin and harder for someone to take over
