Virgin Australia Business Class - Meals, Menus & Service

Well, actually, when the vego option had ran out, I didn't feel like eating anything else, so I didn't ask if there was anything else other than the chips ... Not that the non-availability put me down or something, just didn't feel like eating a meal..

When the FA told vego had ran out and she can offer the chicken schnitz. I said I'm a vego, so can't have chicken. And the FA "Oh, I'm sorry, in that case I can offer you potato chips" ... I declined the offer and kept having sparkling water ...
That’s fairly standard… it’s usually ‘would you like some chips, nuts or a cookie’ (to go with your drink).

As a fairly frequent traveller and having sampled everything by this stage (and pretty happy with it) I always pass on the meal choice and have what ever is left. It usually means everyone in the cabin gets their choice. The only exception being yesterday when - after the gnocchi for three flights in a row - I stepped in to get first crack at the chicken :) (sorry 2F!)

If the meal choice runs out then that's about it these days. If you're vego, maybe tell the crew if you identity a chance on boarding before they take orders.
 
BNE-HBA, lunch

OJ or water PDB. I had chicken parmi with sweet potato mash and broccoli. The parmi world have been improved with a crunchy coating, but was lovely. A Pinot Grigio and sparkling water.

The FA was quite chuffed when I told her how much better the Virgin meals were compared to the Qantas equivalent.

There isn't any!!! even the 737 is all economy, and I hate the A320 also all economy for 3hr 50min trip. No lounge in Darwin either.

There isn't any!!! even the 737 is all economy, and I hate the A320 also all economy for 3hr 50min trip. No lounge in Darwin either.
I wrote to Virgin asking when they would fix this and .........crickets!
Just did a quick search of DRW–PER and it appears that VA is not selling this flight in J. QF will though...

PER <> DRW operated by VARA with an A320 with no business class.
There was a stage when it was a B737-800 weekdays and A320's over the weekend.
You could could sometimes get a rare B737-800 (with business), but seems to be in the past.
There are still some random B737-800 with business class flying PER <> BME, but I expect them to get pulled from the forward booking schedules.

B737-800's with business class (operated by VAd) from Perth will mainly be BNE, SYD and PER. With the remaining treks done with A320, B737-700, all economy only.

Yep, it’s a shame but it is what it is. From ADL we are required to fly QF or head east first if we want J to PER
 
Yes Archie's the premium gin is Y only unless you pay. they could give it for half price maybe, ah not fussed but found out some time ago.

It was very tasty although I had to deconstruct it to eat as too hot to pick up and to hard to cut with a knife. The salad did look very good. Landed 15 mins early, bags out first and out of the airport and in the Uber before SAT.
 
VA698 this morning, choice of the mustard chicken with potato and green beans, or a vegetarian pasta. Was not hungry but of course must sample in the interests of science so chose the latter. Quite good again - cake was delicious, too.

VA920 this morning - 0735 departure and called to board at 0705 from the Lounge and gate was showing Final Call when we got to 44A...a bit surprised, but I guess it was Saturday morning efficiency!
Got onboard and there wasn't any "welcome to Business" or special welcome. No PDB's served either as the CM and one of the cabin crew seemed to want to chat about their rosters and trips to DPS and past trips to Samoa rather than attend to the full J cabin (8/8) :(
Once up in the air, service was quite basic - was told there was Cheese & Egg Quesadilla with salsa and a "crock, umm...." - I had to let the CM know that it wasn't a grilled sandwich, but a Croque Monsieur. 8)
Mrs Hawk had the quesadilla, which looked better than my Croque (I guess I got the butt end of the sourdough loaf!)...and also got offered beer, wine, spirits, soft drinks - I guess flying at 7:30 is a bit taxing, but figured I'd just go with the sparkling water for the moment!
Orders taken 2AC, DF, then 1AC, DF. Served 1AC, 2AC, then 2DF and 1DF.
Whilst the CM was nice enough, the service standard was nowhere near the expectations of VA.20230225_080332.jpg

Another excellent VA experience. A PDB tray of sparkling wine was brought round with bottled still water already waiting at our seats. A request by one passenger for a PDBeer was quite understandably knocked back!

Instead of going straight to dinner service, a drinks and snacks service was offered first with dinner not until about 90 minutes into the flight. Somewhat understandable given Sydney to Denpasar is just about the longest flight in their network and I enjoyed the extended service, but I can also see how this might be controversial given VA still haven't sorted out an international lounge and the flight had been delayed by almost an hour.

I had a gin and tonic to drink. Snacks offered were chips, nuts or both and for review purposes I went for both! Enjoyed both snacks although if I had to choose one it would be the chips.

Dinner options were the Thai-style chicken green curry with rice or truffle mac and cheese with ratatouille. I went with the green curry.

Both options were served with a starter of capsicum (EDIT: I'm told it's actually beetroot hummus!) dip with warmed flatbread, Mainland cheese and crackers and a chocolate cake. Thoroughly enjoyed this meal, the flatbread and dip were surprisingly good and the green curry tasted fresh with just the right amount of spice. Had sparkling water and a glass of merlot to accompany the meal.

Order of service on this flight was the traditional 1A, 1D, 1F, 2A, 2C, 2D and 2F (1C unoccupied). The green curry was popular and looked to have run out by the time 2D were ordering, but after double-checking an extra one was found and offered to them.

Our flight attendant Tehlia was great. She addressed all passengers by name throughout the flight and kept the drinks topped up. I think they tend to get some interesting characters on this flight, particularly in the Y cabin, so some of the announcements were a bit Jetstar-esque but delivered with that signature fun Virgin flair 😂 . Rope was in place which kept the J cabin quiet. Interestingly in Y, after the first cart service the lights were turned off and the crew took a 30-minute break during which time passengers were advised to use the call bell only for medical emergencies. Given the departure time and flight length it seemed they were selling plenty of food and drinks in the back.

The merlots kept coming and I had four glasses by the time we reached Bali.

One complaint about the flight is that my tray table in 2A was broken; it didn't sit flat and slanted down. I was worried about its ability to support the meal tray and found the best solution was to extend it out and rest the right edge on the centre console, this meant it sagged in the middle but was otherwise stable enough to eat/drink on. Aircraft was VH-YIW should you want to avoid it! Seat could also have been a bit cleaner, as you can see from the tray table below and there was also some empty Panadol strips left over from a previous passenger in the seat pocket. Lavatories were perfectly clean though.

But apart from the tray table and seat cleanliness issues it was an enjoyable flight with good food, drinks and service. Stay tuned for a review of the return journey, which features a little "blast from the past" for the VA 1.0 fans! For now I'll leave you with this beautiful sunset over the great state of Western Australia.
