Here's my return PER-SYD lunch. Chicken and brie brioche. Quite tasty. Quinoa salad the alternative.

Note the cheese is plated here seemingly in place of the cured meats rather than in addition as was the case on the way over. Asked for a snack nearing end of flight and was told they had "chips that weren't really chips" and egg salad sandwich. Didn't seem to have any other chips/chocolate, maybe all sold out from economy? Don't think it was the crew being lazy because service was very good. Small egg salad sandwich was presented nicely on a plate and was sufficient.

Am a bit tired of EXACTLY the same wine selection on every flight. Might be an indication I've had too much of it 😜

Per - Syd lunchtime flight yesterday - chicken with Avo and melted cheese roll View attachment 249359

In contrast Syd - Per dinner on QF which looked like something the dog threw up (tasted bland) View attachment 249360
The QF dish looks better to me. Have VA sorted the (lack of) heating for bread products? Still, nothing like pre-Covid food on transcons...

Flew J from SYD to OOL and the breakfast options were potato rosti with salmon or something with mushrooms and cheese on toast. I chose the potato rosti and salmon, it was nice but quite a small portion size. Would have been good if it came with some spinach or tomato to help fill it out a bit. In the lounge I only had a coffee as the "hot food" option available was a pre made ham and cheese toastie, no thanks!

On the evening flight back from OOL I had the gnocchi with broccolini and pumpkin. It was ok, the other option was something with chicken which probably would have been nicer. In the OOL lounge they had Spirits in the little 50ml bottles which was a nice change of pace from the usual beer im used to having in the virgin lounges.

Flew Brisbane to Sydney yesterday and the options were the Chicken or the Gnocchi (no photos but there are pictures of the same meals posted by others above). I had the chicken which was really good, having recently flown both Qantas and Virgin business class the food, drinks and service on the VA flights has been superior compared to the QF flights.

ADL-SYD Dinner
Inbound flight arrived about 35 minutes late so staff seemed a bit rushed on departure but thought they still did a pretty decent job.
Meal offerings were the Moroccan Chicken or the Pumpkin Gnocchi. Wife had the gnocchi and said it was quite tasty, I went for the Chicken. Wasn’t my favourite meal as I’m not a huge fan of chickpeas and despise Cauliflower but despite the looks the Chicken was tender and juicy with some real good flavour. Service was excellent with constant attention and refills of my vodka and other passengers had their wine topped up immediately. Ended up making up some of the lost time too so can’t complain at all

I had the Moroccan chicken SYD-BNE a few days back. Chickpeas weren't my favourite but thought the chicken was flavoursome and not dry. Probably the most tasty meal I've had under the new service offerings.

My first flights since Feb last year over the last week or so -

Had the turkey melt TSV-BNE (320pm) which as many have noted doesn’t look much but was quite tasty. BNE-ADL (815pm) was the lamb pie. Quite tasty with a side of pumpkin and chutney.

Compared to the other mobs offering, VA wind hands down on the soft product side of things.

I posted this elsewhere but here’s my comparison:

Agree on the food front, just wish there was a higher rotation of wine offerings/slightly higher end bottles. Qantas runs about $25-$30 retail, virgin about half that. Bang for your buck virgin is miles ahead though, hence I'm not only using points to fly business these days.

The wine doesn't bother me too much, as it was reasonable for what it was. Getting caught up on price brackets can be fraught with danger as there are some absolutely terrible wines that come with higher price tags. Side note - although I've not used it well at all, I did a Winemaking (Oenology) degree at uni so I'd like to think I have a reasonable ability to make that call.

The "spirit" is clearly back with VA too.

The bang for your buck has always been superb on VA compared to QF, and it's even more so now since their "relaunch." As a data point, it cost me $985 TSV-ADL via BNE, where as ADL-CNS via SYD was $1953.

Agree that price isn't necessarily an indication of quality and smart buying can go a long way. Only provided the $ figures as a data point. In general I find the wine selection perfectly fine on virgin, but usually the Qantas wine is of higher quality (after much research 😁). Also haven't seen any rotation in wines on virgin since the relaunch and on my last flight there was only one white option, paired down from 2-3 choices on previous flights.

I enjoyed the pinot noir served on board my flight, whereas the Shiraz was pretty average. The FA kept the wine free flowing throughout the 5h 15min flight.

I didnt like the chicken dish at all. I got a lot of chicken on mine (3 decent sized pieces) but it's all thigh meat and there was a lot of skin and blubber on my pieces. I know it's just personal preference, as most people actually prefer the thighs. I just had a couple of bites and a tiny bit of the chickpeas and left the rest. The attendant joked that it must have been his cooking when he took my plate away lol

Same lamb pie was offered on VA992 BNE-SYD that night, along with the cheese, but no dessert offered. Other option was quinoa and halloumi salad.
Pie was great and service was ok - flight attendant disappeared into economy cabin for extended periods and drinks service wasn't particularly generous.

Brisbane lounge had toasties on offer, which hit the spot.

SYD-MEL lunchtime service was Turkey and Brie Sourdough Stack or the Haloumi Quinoa Salad. Opted for the salad. It was pretty tasty. As I have mentioned before you self dress the salad which is great.

Service was really good considering all flights were delayed on Friday and it looked to be a pretty stressful afternoon for the airport staff and crew.
