Only heard of this scam last week. Basically the scammers intercept your email enquires and then pretend to be the owners of the accommodation you are trying to book. They then tell you to deposit your money in a Barclays account to finalise the booking. Its been going on for 18 months and now victims and accommodation owners are going to launch a class action against Barclays.

I hope they win.

Yes I agree, but anyone in Australia booking expensive accommodation in Europe ought to check it out carefully.

If you can't use a credit card (and hence have redress in the case of a scam), then you need to be extra specially careful. Why not phone the vendor using their phone number from the website? Harder to intercept phone calls (but it can be done).

Not worth the hassle otherwise.
