Very quick question - Travelling to South Korea

Hi all, first post. Have had a quick search, could not find what I was after and hopefully have put this in the right forum.

Anyway..to my question.

I am travelling from Melb > Sydney > Tokyo (Narita) with Qantas and Tokyo to Pusan (S.Korea with JAL). The leg from Melb to Sydney is domestic and I know I need to change in Sydney to T1 terminal for next leg. So, my question is this. Can I book my luggage in at Melbourne and pick it up at Pusan, or do I have to claim my bags in Sydney domestic and then recheck them in at International. The once I get to Tokyo, get the bags again.

Or am I lucky enough to check it in Melbourne and just pick them up at final destination - Pusan S. Korea.

Any help or assistance would be appreciated

I can't fully help with your question. But if your on the one booking reference then you should be able to check your lounge from MEL to Tokyo.

Otherwise I'm not sure about the transfer to JAL for the flight to Pusan

MEL-SYD-NRT should have no problem checking your bags through to here. Check-in at the Melbourne Domestic-Inernational check-in counter. You wont need to collect your bags in Sydney they will ticket through for you.

You MAY be able to ticket all the way, depends on whether or not QF have an interline agreement with JAL (they probably do) and whether Japan allows this.

I did MEL-HKG-TPE last week. MEL-HKG on one ticket with QF, HKG-TPE with KA on another ticket and was able to check my bag all the way through. Of course I had to request it as it as a separate ticket on another airline and check-in person had to check with supervisor but was able to be done by linking the 2 bookings at the time.

No mention made of how long you're in Japan. I did something similar last year: QF to Tokyo, then JAL to Busan. I stayed overnight in Japan, so I can't really help with your enquiry.

Off topic, but didn't you find the Tokyo to Busan flight very expensive (around $1000 AUD)? My flight to Busan this year was QF (asiana metal) to ICN and then ICN to BUS on a $150 domestic flight. Much cheaper. Also was pleasantly surprised by Asiana service... might have to get myself on the Asiana FF program if I keep going back to Busan. As a QP member and a loyal Qantas customer, that's not an easy thing for me to say.

Domestic flights in Korea were about $75 when I booked in April. I thought Asiana was disappointing, especially the lack of infant seatbelts. Their J service was also lacking.

Use the special counter indicated by timtammi and you WILL be able to check your luggage all the way through to Pusan.

However, if Qantas cannot provide it in MEL you will need to get your NRT-PUS boarding pass from JAL in NRT.

Asiana is good for Economy given the 34 inch seat pitch. For J the food is excellent, seat is good (172 degree slope) but IFE is hit or miss (either PTV or AVOD).

Somehow they are rated by Skytrax as Airline of the Year 2010. They are good but not that good IMHO. Still they are better than a lot of other airlines.
