Velocity Offer 'that's out of this world'

Sorry but if that's the promotion I think you're referring to it was an Amex promotion (aimed at putting pressure on QF) and Amex sets terms conditions and timing of points transfer. We have already let them know that their tardiness is frustrating our members and reflecting poorly on us but we haven't got a bigger stick to hit them over the head with.
cheers

Blah.

Another marketing company trying to induce hype by introducing "fake" leaks, and starting fake blogs. This has all been done before. Maybe I'm just being Gen-X cynical, but really, honestly, it's a tried and completely failed marketing method.

If you want to see how things went horribly wrong for Coke with the Coke Zero launch, check out The Zero Movement Sucks

But it got your attention, didn't it?

I agree with your suggestion that you are being Gen-X cynical. A couple of points to note:
1) The blog to which you refer was just that, a blog, I am sure DJ will be forgiven for not taking it as marketing gospel. If Virgin does anything well, I'd say it is marketing; and
2) The Coke Zero and DJ promos are very different. This one is deliberately tongue in cheek and is no way actually trying to encourage the creation of an underground or grassroots movement; and
3) 'Completely failed marketing technique'!!!! Tell that to Channel 10. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it has failed - 13 pages on AFF are testament to that.

I for one am waiting and hoping that the promo delivers. Where else am I going to send my points? Not to QF, that's for sure!

Agreed, and I would also add that it's probably up to the "bean counters" at Virgin to decide whether it has succeeded or failed, and they won't be able to do that till they know the numbers of people converting.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating,I'll wait to see the substance of the deal before I make a choice.

I would also note that my Gen - Gen X are not supposed to be cynical. They are supposed to be savvy. They see through BS marketing campaigns like coke zero. They switch into things that take the p*ss out of big company marketing - oh just like the virgin campaign.

Just a general outline without going into the fine details of demography ;)

....Meanwhile the bank credit cards are writing snail mail to unsavvy people saying how great the direct sweep to Qantas will be for them.

And in response to my questions of NAB about
isn't there something called a NAB Velocity card', they say yep it exists but my NAB M/card gold rewards must go to Qantas.

Overall, I think QFF has the better campaign. And they've snaffled the mums and dads who, over several months, chose QFF as their default ff scheme lest they forget dates and are forever doomed to buy toasters with their points

Which in some ways, proves to me that the Qantas "Direct Sweep" will be a failure for Qantas.

I hope it fails miserably. If you sign up for a "direct sweep" card knowing what it is (eg a co-branded Amex/Qantas card) then so be it. But for the arrogant roo to change the landscape -- now that's just being a wannabee monopolistic company.

Hopefully the roo will scurry back to Mascot with their tail between their legs begging people to send points their way.

That's disappointing, I was really hoping to be able to move NAB gold rewards points to velocity.

As for making a choice, the mums and dads don't have any choice when it comes to NAB gold rewards. They switch automatically on 24 Feb. So they're going to need to remember those dates if they want to buy a toaster from NAB.

Glad to see someone asked Amex 'where's the bonuses'. Can't Richard ring Amex again? He'd get a Galatic flight if he paid his Virgin Mobile bill in 1 cent pieces:p

Uuum, hasn't an airline hijacked every NAB Golds Rewards member, Safeway and Caltex Fuel shopper? Ditto for those offered x,000 bonuses for shopping Harvey Norman etc etc.

Virginamerica have announced they'll be starting flights in April between SFO and John Wayne Airport in Orange County (with US$59 fares).

Elevate announced more partnerships are in the wings with other points schemes (like Velocity?), airlines (like Alaskan and United?), cards/banks, car hirers and hotels.

I hope Citi Plat lowers or removes, at least for the life of the promo, the requirement that only blocks of 15k' can move to Velocity.

Hmm - I am sure I read that the price of a Virgin Galactic flight was 5million Virgin Atlantic flying club points - so 25M DJ seems a little steep...

It's 2 million points (Virgin Atlantic Airways - Popup), and the points need to be earned flying on Virgin Atlantic.

Having said that, Virgin Galactic flights are US$200,000 so roughy AUD300,000, so 25 million points seems ok on that basis (not great, but not overly poor). Not sure why you can do so much better with Virgin Atlantic.

Southwest has retaliated with a $49US fare from Orange County to/from SFO. Americans are cheering Vamerica on.

I'm confused.... what has Virgin America got to do with Velocity or Virgin Blue/V Australia?

I'm confused.... what has Virgin America got to do with Velocity or Virgin Blue/V Australia?

The secret's out - they all start with V.

And VAmerica's rewards site mentions as 'coming soon' partnering with reward programs (reciprocity with Velocity??), winning flights on VAustralia, other airlines (and see drop downs on other airline sites), and more cards offering points. It all mirrors what V Oz might be planning before people decide to go with qff or not. Its all speculation. And maybe there'll be bonii to lure people away from qff direct sweeps. Anyway, time will tell.
