Was just exploring some options, thinking about doing VA PE one way to LAX, then Hawaiian LAX-HNL for a few days, then HNL-SYD. When I look at VA's site, it says approx $4,700 for a one way fare per person. WTF?

I thought this was normal for a one way fare? I know Qantas one way fares are often ridiculous in comparison to a return..

It has been said many times. Often cheaper to get a return and use the return leg later on another trip.

Around Sept 2nd. It is only showing the flexi seats. They are around $3,300 p.p. each way on a return ticket. Sorry but I can't see how they can charge $4,700 p.p. one way. In fact I think that's daylight robbery and I thought the days of ridiculously high prices for one way fares were long gone. It looks to me like they are saying "well if you're going to fly back with another airline we're gonna slug you."

The reason is, all of those fares you're seeing on the return basis are sale fares, and the one way fares are just their standard everyday fares.

It still seems high, i'd expect a one way fare to be around 65-75% of a return fare generally, but given theres a sale fare on PE finishing today for $1949 plus taxes return, youd be better off doing HNL on a separate trip.

Righto thanks for explaining that. HA are US$956 LAX-HNL-LAX. Might do the Hawaii thing another time. Bit expensive for a side trip, and we'll probably be near enough skint by the end of 7 or 8 weeks in the US.

Have done a bit more digging and decided maybe to go cattle class on QF PER-SYD and VA PE SYD-LAX-SYD and QF SYD-PER. Its about $600 cheaper than going PE PER-SYD-LAX-SYD-PER, and QF is $20 cheaper than DJ  (and they give a feed and a movie  ). QF PER-SYD arrives at 1610, VA SYD-LAX departs at 2030. Just wondering if VA would only open their checkin at 1730.

Then on the other hand, we pay the $20 extra on DJ with no food and no movie. Will DJ check the bags right through to LAX?
