Just for the fun of it and because I love playing around with numbers I looked at my last 12 months experience with the SPG program-basically the time that I have decided to switch from HH to SPG as my main hotel loyalty program.I certainly thought i would be getting a little less value for points but make that up with mrsdrron brownie points with the suite upgrades.
As it turned out there in fact is very little difference.The reason is the promos and opportunities for extra points which are much greater on SPG-infact I hardly ever earned extra points above those that are earned by status at HH.Certainly there are often double point promos but they are either not where i am staying or the extra cost did not create any value.
For me HH points are worth $A0.01.286 as I use them on GLON awards.Just no value transferring to an airline program.
SPG points are to me worth $A0.07.237 as I transfer them to AA miles with the 25% bonus and then use for a RTW J award.
Earning as HH diamond = 25 points per $US.
Earning as SPG plat = 3 points per $US.However in the last 12 months I have received an extra 50% points with plat amenities and promotions(and that is not counting an extra 6 absolutely free nights).
So when I do the calculations per $US spend I get $A0.32.15 value from HH and $A0.32.56 value from SPG.Add in the that with either program by paying with my DC I get an extra $A0.06.5 value of AA miles per $us spend and I am pretty pleased with the value I get out of these loyalty schemes.
Once again these calculations would be different for different people but for me do represent actual value because the hotel and flight awards I would have paid for.
