It appears I'm a real amateur at knowing the rules... I want to fly from BNE to KLM (Kathmandu) in September. The best itinerary I can find (price and pain) is with Malaysia Airlines through KL. $1138 round trip (pretty cheap I thought). I would prefer to fly in J, but this is $3489 return and more than I am willing to pay.

I have managed to use QF points to fly Iberia earlier this year, and figured as a OW airline I could do the same with Malaysia. That doesn't seem to be an option on the QF redemption site. Is it simply because it is a trip initiating out of Australia and they don't want competition, or is it more complex than that? Am I missing something here?

Being able to redeem points on other OneWorld carriers is not an issue, getting availability to show online is a different more challenging issue, often requiring a call to QFF.

Minor point but if you ask to got KLM you may end up in Iran. Kathmandu is KTM.

Qantas has not (and apparently will not) load KUL into the classic award booking tool. Therefore, any classic awards involving MH must be booked over the phone with QF direct.

It sounds crazy, all in OneWorld as partners yet rarely show other airlines on their site, like working against each other rather than with.

I go to HKG couple times a year out of CNS, I simply do not wish to go via another capital city when I can fly direct on CX in under 7 hours, problem is, unless I book a very long way out classic awards in Y or J rarely show as CX Y+ never. Was looking for HKG/YVR recently nothing in J or Y+ but F yes, far too many points for me.

No
MH awards are shown online.

AFAIK only QF, BA, AA and very ocassional RJ and CX flights show online.
If booking a oneworld award you are much much better calling

They have different IT systems that do not talk to each other well. (Sabre, Adameus, airline customization of these, etc) Even for simple thing like reservations. Award are limited in all airlines

Of course, this explains a lot then.

It doesn't quite explain why British Airways can display award seats on all oneworld airlines (including MH) on their website which you can book online.

In my case QFF classic award seats on CX HKG/YVR are showing just a few in F and J but hardly a one for Y July to Oct. beats me.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'm confused then. What am I doing wrong?

I also think more oneworld airlines than you mentioned can be booked using the tool. Here's on showing AY:

And on this topic of MH and QF's relationship, I know it's a little thing, but how pathetic is it when your oneworld partner - the very same partner you sponsored into the alliance - gets a generic green square when Emirates gets it logo. Again, I think MH is the only oneworld carrier that gets the generic square.

There is also Comair (BA OW Affiliate) in South Africa which has the green square.

In the example you illustrate, with 'kul' in the destination window, I'd say it looks like the sysyem hasn't recognised 'kul' as typed (for whatever reason) and so not turned it into 'Kuala Lumpur' so it won't return a result. Try again making sure Kuala Lumpur is in the window.

Interesting. That seems to do it.

Don't know, Kuala Lumpur comes up for me, but the only options I ever get ex-PER are on CX!

Yes. I've now found the same. Interesting, too.
