Using Qantas pts on LATAM flights in S America seem cheap, low taxes low points required what's the catch,do you have to pay for carry on and luggage?Or they included in your classic reward booking?

No, luggage is included as is seat selection.

I have SCL-MVD//EZE-SCL booking in the system. I have a vague recollection that it mentioned luggage allowance during the booking process - but I could be wrong. The QF e-Ticket and app/website are a little vague/confusing on actual allowance but when you open the booking on the LA website, it quite clear.

You can also select seats on the LA website also but there’s a bit of a trick. Go to “Check-in” to retrieve the LATAM PNR first.

I find advance LA fares within South America are so dirt cheap in Y+ that I can never make the value proposition for redeeming points work out.

For example, SCL to MVD is 14,000 points and $40 in economy compared to advanced Y+ fares being around $300 all in.

I can get much better value from 14,000 points than saving $200.

Alas, when we made these bookings LA were quoting very large USD amounts just for whY….so it became a very good use of points! Otherwise our Feb trip back to SA was going to go South in a big way. Almost hit “Cancel” on 2x J QF CRs SYD-SCL (return)…
I have the lowest Qff level I noticed your Platinum would that make a difference?
No. LA has left OW.

Apart from maintaining some reciprocal lounge access, no other benefits now.

Update on using qff points for internal S America flights, have saved thousands of dollars doing points for flights and paying minimal tax dollars, here's the kicker they were all direct perfectly planned flights now Latam have got thier hands on them and are rerouting me to all parts of S America to get to my destination.
Had a direst flight SCL to EZE and now have got me re routed via Lima.I think I will cancel it,looks like KLM have a direct flight( Freedom flight?)will book on that one.

I just had a schedule change on a LATAM reward booking too. Was due to fly EZE-SCL-AKL with a ~3 hour layover in Santiago, but LATAM cancelled my EZE-SCL flight and rebooked me onto one leaving 9 hours earlier.

Australians cannot transit through Chile for more than 8 hours without of visa, so this booking is now unusable. Am trying to get rebooked onto AEP-SCL-AKL...

10 years ago had same trouble on latam they treat people who are using points as second class.Had direct flight booked EZE -SCL and rebooked me on a flight with a stopover.

We just flew SCL-MVD//EZE-SCL on points without issue.

I did load up the booking in the LA app / website and selected seats plus we did online check in, so less chance of getting bumped on the day. The return flight, they automatically checked us in 48 hrs prior.

On a revenue flight last year, they rerouted me from SCL-MVD to SCL-GRU-MVD with horrendous connection times.

They were trying to be helpful in that the new route got me to Montevideo on the same day as originally booked. I didn’t really need that so I opted for the direct flight the next day.
