Welcome to AFF.

Would you like to share some example of the flights you have redeemed and nominate the frequent flyer program you use (I assume Qantas, but you don't state it)?

Booking QF awards flights - a journey of discovery!

Hi All,

I wanted to use points to book a flight Melbourne - Bangkok return for me & family (3 passengers).

I got all our coughulated points together - total 250K.

We wanted to travel back in as best a class as we could (JQ starclass). The fun begins now....

Use the new anyseat rewards, if you book a return flight you can't choose different seat classes. How stupid is that? You can choose any class seat on any leg if you arent using points - why is this restricted on rewards bookings?

To get around this I decided to book separate 1-way flights.

I booked Melbourne - Bangkok using points - it cost a total 172K points for the three of us.

It left me with a balance of 78K points. So I now go to use the rest of my points to book the return leg using the new "points plus pay" option so we can return using starclass.

The online booking says I don't have enough points - what the...?

I search and search and search for why, then give up and call QF - the operator puts me on hold - then comes back and tells me I need a minimum of 30K points per passenger for any awards booking.

I notice on other posts that QF seem to have a habit of not publishing all the rules & terms, etc - I can't find anything that says this is a requirement - can anyone else find this info on their website?

So in the end I paid for starclass seats back from Bangkok rather than use points.

I know I could have booked 2 seats using points + pay and then a separate single seat fully paid to get around it, but I didn't think of that at the time.

I looked a buying topup points - I would have had to pay nearly 400AUD for the 12000 point I needed - not worth it I think.

So - be aware there is a minimum number of points - currently 30K per passenger - otherwise you could get stuck not being able to use points even though you should be able to!

All points plus pay options have a minimum number of points required for redemption. This prevents you selecting 0 points and 100% money. The problem seems to be that you cannot determine the minimum prior to going through the booking process. I imagine for shorter or longer itineraries the minimum number of points is different.
