Using my points

Am I a bit slow or do others find it hard to use their points. I have approximately 400,000 of the bloody things, went to hire a car ( the flights are too hard to get) and found I could only use a voucher for 1 days hire, by the time I worked out the costs it was chaeper to use the entertainment book voucher for a car upgrade. Any suggestions? Can I give them to a charity as the service on Emirates leaves the Red Kanga for dead

Points are very easy to use for flights as long as you are prepared to book almost a year in advance or you are able to be very flexible with dates and/or destinations. I use my points a couple of times a year for family holidays and have never had any problems using them. Good luck and welcome to AFF.

I'm a charity? How about transferring say 200,000 or 300,000 into
my FF account. I reckon you could count for a relative for a short time.

There are many charities who would welcome any points donation.

The major charities I know about are located in the US but you may find some with offices or associates here in Australia. Make-A-Wish-Foundation, Children's Cancer Association, Red Cross are just some of the charities that receive frequent flyer point donations.

A good place to start could be at Award Donation Center.

Depends on what type of travel you do, as to how you can use your points.

Most will agree that upgrades are the best use of points, rather than using them for getting the seats in the first place. Of course, if you travel domestically on red e-deals, then you'll be waiting for hell to freeze over before you can use them. Having said that, if you travel internationally, then you have the 90 day queue and it depends on your status - before you even consider that you only find out within 24 hours whether you're sitting at the pointier end of the plane.

Remember that Qantas has (intentionally in my opinion) tied points redemption to FF status. So those who fly regularly with Qantas (ie, the frequent flyers) get access to more opportunities to redeem their FF points for Qantas rewards (flights and upgrades) than those who have "earned" their points by spending heavily on credit cards. It is a "Frequent Flyer" program after all.

As a QF FF Platinum member I have not have any trouble using my FF points to redeem flight awards on or close to the dates I have desired. Obviously if you want to travel on the popular redemption routes (to London or USA) at popular times (school holidays, northern hemisphere summer peak season etc) you have to plan very early to access the limited number of seats.

I am sure I could find somewhere worthwhile to go with 400,000 QF FF points. Just be creative and flexible and plan early. Or look for short-notice trips where last minute FF award availability often pops up.

This happens a lot with Cathay.
So if a trip to Hong Kong interests you, try checking availability one week out.

A friend with QF bronze status, who is not a frequent flyer by any stretch of the imagination, managed to get 2 return award tickets SYD-BKK-SYD (8 night stay) in November using credit card points a week before departing.

Have patience and be flexible with travel dates.

Also, be prepared to be flexible with your awards - you want to go to London? Try CX, or QF to HKG and BA from there, or QF to SIN and BA from there. For the LOTFAP, try using QF and AA via NRT.

Yes - as I've posted elsewhere, I just booked a return flight to SIN in business class with points for the April school hols. Availability was changing daily so it is possible to get seats if you persist.
