some people may already know this, but think it's worth sharing
been trying to tie up a flight from Europ back to sydney next year and sometimes the options provided when searching from xx_ to sydney wasn't quite what I wanted.
Then I started looking at what was available for individual sectors and would sometimes see options I didn't get when looking at the entire trip in 1 go.
I prefer not to deal with people over the phone for a booking unless I have to so gave the multicity option a go with QF and UA and found that s long as you keep the "stopover" under 24 hours I could better choose the routing I wanted
eg with QF
was thinking to give QR first a try out of CDG. Could get F on the fight the day I wanted, but then saw there was an F seat avail late on the day before that would give me an 18 hour layover in DOH then F onwards to SYD. Between being able to spend a decent level of time in the new F lounge and do 1 of the free city tours I thought this is a viable option to enjoy F on the entire trip.
eg with United
Was able to give a routing for CDG xFRA to HND on ANA F then onward with TG on F to BKK and then SYD
Multicity also worked quite well for me last year on a paid ticket where I wanted to have a night in SFO on my way from MEX to LAX so I could catch up with a friend. By using multicity I could give myself a 23 hour layover that wasn't provided as an option when searching for a MEX LAX flight. The flight was also cheaper than a direct flight, so that was a bonus too.
So if you tend to have a preference for a particular transit airport, or a particular airline that might not show up with a standard o/w or return search, give multi city a go
