Using Accor points can be complex!

Interesting data points ---

1) Stayed in a Novotel in Paris, but somehow Accor temporarily froze our account, so couldn't use points there - no issue - just strange.

2) Stayed in an accor hotel in Athens --- said our account had a limit of using 2,000 points at a time maxium - checked with Accor, no such restriction

3) Stayed in sebel in NSW --- similar to above, but graciously, debited 2,000 points off our account for a few days running until points used up.

Anyone else running into similar issues? I find Accor to be a quirky program all around, which is less standardised than say Marriott, when interacting with their individual hotels.

Yes, I've long found this with Accor; the app can politely often be called "bloody hopeless" and what you get with a hotel in terms of adherence to the program is a case-by-case basis :)

I've been told that I can use 2000 points upon check out. If I wanted to use more I would have had to do that during booking. Can't say whether this is new or right since I usually do use the points during the boooking process.

Can't you pay for the entire booking with ALL points (or part thereof) when booking on the Accor website?

From what I've been able to work-out, not all hotels let you use ALL points when making the booking, but will let you on checking out?!

My experience was the other way around. Only 2000 on check out at some properties. No issues when cashing in when booking online.

Interesting that others have had the 2000 points check-out experience - has anyone seen that 'documented' anywhere as part of their T&Cs?

Yes. If the app/website lets you do it. 2000 pts = €40 or multiples there of.

A few years ago, Accor introduced the ability to pay at the hotel with points (obviously on nonrefundable room rates). I wouldn’t be surprised if individual hotels have decided to cap that if they can get away with it. Curious how much of the €40 goes to the hotel?…

I've not seen it specifically documents, but if you use 4,000 points or more at the hotel, there are additional verifications that happen. Essentially ALL will send you a code that you give to the receptionist. Maybe they've decided it's too hard!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I have a feeling that this is probably a deliberate attempt by hotels not to allow people to use large bunches of points at their hotel --- I suspect it might not be in their interest financially - for instance, we had 10,000 points to use, which is circa $300, which is effectively a free night.

Re using points when booking --- I noticed you used to be able to do this, but in recent times, a range of hotels I've booked have not offered that option, which again, makes me think it might reflect on hotels not wanting people to use points at their hotels.

It could be a disconnect between ALL and what individual hotels do in practice, given the vagaries of the financial relationship between them.

PS as a side-note, we managed to use all 10,000 points at a recent hotel by the hotel kindly offering to deduct 2,000 points from our account per day for 5 days, and just pay them the difference when checking out --- seems unnecessarily complicated for all!
