We have a gift voucher from Qantas - a compensation on something we complained. The conditions of the gift voucher are towards flights with Qantas or Oneworld. We were so excited and thought we could use it for a short domestic trip (as the value of the gift voucher is not material).

We were disappointed to discover that the fares used by Qantas to redeem the voucher were very high / expensive. We were not allowed to redeem the voucher for discounted economy fares - making it worthless. We could book a red e-deals for a third of the fares quoted to us for redeeming the voucher! So, it looks like the voucher will be destined for the rubbish bin.

Has anyone received one of those gift vouchers from Qantas? Have you redeemed it successfully? How did you use it?

What do you have in writing from Qantas, a physical voucher?

If so, can you reprint the fine print on here so I can read it, as that sounds a bit off to me, and I might be able to point you in the right direction to assist?

I got $300 for failed AVOD on a HKG-SYD flight. Given all my travel is paid for by my business (pretty much) and the voucher was only reddeemable against flights (not fuel surcharges on awards) I was left in a bit of a pickle as to what to do with it - eventually I used it for a business flight (CircleAsia) and just made sure my boss was aware of the cost savings ;)

This is one of those areas where I think Qantas prices their compensation based on not 100% of people cashing it in and offsetting the cost of compensation against the revenue earned from the subsequent flights - not a great practice...

I received a $100 voucher from QF because I provided feedback for non functioning IFE on a SIN-MEL flight.

If the voucher looks like a paper ticket then you should be able to redeem from QF Travel store and they will waive the service fee and you should be able to have access to any airfare available on the internet apart from O class I think. I used it on a one-way SYD-AKL flight and paid the difference.

More information in this thread.

Thanks for all the replies.

Travel Guru: The voucher looks like a paper ticket. It said we could use it towards flights with Qantas or Oneworld (no Jetstar). It has an expiry date, and the value of the voucher. It has no name so if we lose it, it cannot be replaced. It cannot be exchanged for cash, used to redeemed Qantas fees - only towards flights.

I think it looks like we have to do what simongr did - to put it toward a business class fare when hubby goes on next work trip, and tell his employer how much he saves them :) . Hopefully his company's the travel agent can do this. Other than this the voucher is really worthless and unusable towards discounted flights. I agree with simongr on Qantas practices in terms of compensation. It seems that we have to spend $1 to offset 10 cents savings.

JohnK: We went to Qantas Travel store and for a domestic flight, there is only one fare code that can be used towards redemption - it is the highest one in economy. They said we could not redeem against any other discounted economy fare codes. A bit bizarre!

I redeemed a voucher late last year (unsolicited credit for $200 due to an aborted flight) and used it for my wife to join me on a business trip to Brisbane. From memory (and I will admit that mine is quite shocking at times) they quoted the cheapest fare but did charge the booking fee.

I can understand that internet-only fares may not be available when using the Qantas shop-front, but restricting the voucher to full-fare economy doesn't sound right. I think you should get another opinion from Qantas.

Cheers,

I have recently got one for $400 for complaining about a non functional AVOD on JNB-SYD.

Its has same conditions as mentioned in the first post, but reading at the experiences people have had, my joy is short lived.

Interesting why Qantas does not provide an electonic voucher that can be used online without any such restrictions.

Then people might be inclined/able to redeem them...

At last hubby was able to use the "useless" vouchers. He will be going to London and NY in June for work, so his company travel agent booked him on a RTW J fare. He gave her the vouchers and she used them towards his fare, saving his company $$$. I told him he should remember to tell his boss.

I was able to book a red e-deal using the voucher @ Qantas Travel in the CBD, and was not charged a booking fee.

I received a $250 voucher for a cancelled flight from SYD - ADL last November. Drove across to the airport in Adelaide (10 minute drive) and used it plus my brand new Qantas/Amex card to pay for a Red e-deal to SYD and return.
Interesting points. I received SC's and miles for my cancelled flight on the flight that I was re-booked on and also received SC's and points for my "freebie". Received my 5000 points for my first use of the card, plus the $50 cash back. Double dipping?? Triple dipping??

Seems good to me.
