Am new here, so hopefully someone can help me with a couple of questions. Am travelling to USA next month and would like to know

1. Can I take a Bic lighter onboard?
2. What do you do with your travel security neck pouch when going through security.
Take it off and place in handbag or leave it under your clothing?
3. How long would it take to walk from TBIT to T4 at LAX. I have 2 and half hours between flights (if all is ok) and walk with a limp, so a brisk walk or running is out of question.

Its been quite a number of years since I travelled and am a bit over whelmed with all the new security measures etc.

Welcome to AFF rojan56.

1. No you can't take lighters on board.
2. Depends on security but the odds are they'll want you to take it off and put it through the scanner, if there's no metal in it you may get away with it though.
3. TBIT to T4 isn't that far, even at a slow pace 5-10 minutes should be fine.

thanks for the quick reply, you have put my mind at rest now...thanks again and keep up the good work.
I love reading this site...very informative...

Hi rojan, welcome to AFF.

I have had workers who smoke, and never seen lighters removed from their possession. Travel security neck pouch, I take it that's a money pouch? Personally I wouldn't worry about one, however, as long as it's metal free, you will be ok to leave it around your neck.

T4 will take a few minutes to walk to, beware of the hawkers, they can be very annoying however harmless.

Enjoy your trip and try not to be overwhelmed. Search this site for all available tips for travel to the USA, aka LOTFAP

Hiya,

I had no problem and I had two bic lighters (I refuse to not have a light after 18 hours with no ciggie!). Both put into the security tray and then straight back into my pocket. They aren't actually banned items as such. This was for international flights too (out of LAX). The only place in the world where I have had my lighter confiscated by security is in China - all their airports. Even HK, Bangkok, KL, etc that have lighters plugged into the ashtrays in their smoking lounges allow you to carry your own.

Worst case scenario - they confiscate a $2 lighter, and you buy another one at the airport news stand :) I wouldn't bother asking passers by - it seems outside of Vegas, no one in the States smokes anymore :(

Alas, we are becoming social pariahs :)
