However on the multi-city bookings page the options are as below, which do I select to get these Instant Upgrade equivalents?

Sorry for all the Q's, I'll do my own research at some point into possible routings once the serious part of the trip to the US is confirmed.

If I travel to SJU:
a) is it considered as entering Central/South America? as per the immigration question upon re-entry into Australia
b) do I need to pass through immigration if I am simply turning around in SJU? (I thought I once read its considered as part of the US for soem reason)
c) If I am turning around, is it safe to be on the same plane I arrived on? ie, is the transit time sufficient? eg: from CLT the flight arrives 1:23pm, then returns at 2:40pm, can I book onto this return flight?

a) Yes, you have to say that you have been in the Caribbean in the last 6 days (but they don't care about Puerto Rico...no Yellow Fever there) See Q#11: https://www.immi.gov.au/managing-au...l/passenger-cards/_pdf/english-ipc-sample.pdf
b & c) No immigration in Puerto Rico

a) Should be no
b) Puerto Rico is a US territory and no immigration formalities if arriving from a US destination
c) probably, but I don't know

a) The question includes the word "Caribbean" so you have to answer "Yes". However, if using Smart Gate a subsequent question listing countries and areas of concern asking if you have visited any of these specifically - Peurto Rico is not among them, so you answer no and off you go.

b) No immigration formalities (as per Tom's post).

c) It's up to you if you want to risk such a turnaround.

I believe, for the flights I was looking at, its the same aircraft, so any inward delay would also be an outward delay..But then SJU looks kinda cool to spend an evening/morning in too..

Same aircraft turn a rounds are the safest options so yep go for it. In saying that, SJU is a fun place so if you haven't been before (and time allows) then spend a day there and check it out.

When I flew to ANC, it was from DFW as that was the only AA flight to ANC that I was aware of.

Where did you find that PHX-ANC flight, as part of the run?

codeshare on US, who will be part of OneWorld at the end of next month, thus eligible for earn on QF

Hmm..

MSY-DFW-ORD-CLT-SJU-MIA(J)-MSY

Earning 480SCs for approx $1,300 USD, That is leaving Friday evening, returning Saturday near midnight. wow.

MSY-ATL-MCO-ATL-MSY on US air $443 USD (tue-wed) for 160 SCs Velocity or 320 AA SCs according to departure date. Assuming you booked now for credit to AA post merger, you're looking at 1.38 $/SC (USD).

hope this helps...
