Hmmm, that flight would be on 16 June... Did LH provide a date for when they were stopping it??? Wonder if I had to redo this flight whether it might be a chance to have a look at the whole itin? Or at least one or two flights? When i finalised the booking after several agents saying it should be 110,000 miles, the last one did say it should have been 120,000 miles because my stopover on the way back was in Europe but because i was on the phone waiting for them to ticket it for over an hour (!!) and all and only had like 112,000 miles or so in my account I think they just agreed to give it to me for 110,000... So if i change they might bump it back up???

Anyway thanks, will do some investigating of my own...

Edit: Hmm, i assume S12 is summer 2012 which would be right around the time i am flying, can't find much else so better call or email lufthansa i suppose...

I think I read it ended in April...you'll have to deal with US not LH to reroute of course.

I generally don't do anything if an airline cancels a segment of my trip until they either notify me or I have to do a change anyway and use it as a waiver excuse. If the airline doesn't notify me then I go to the airport and let them deal with it. It often ends up in a revenue booking class on day of departure.

Having said that I am aware that flights to India can be packed especially at peak travel times, this strategy doesn't work for everyone. ;)

An INVOL reroute should not lift the miles required for this journey.

Just booked 4 seats to Europe next June/July on TG with 2 in F and 2 in J (allowing us to all be on the same aircraft). There are four of us travelling (2 adults + 2 children) and this was the only way to get us all on the same aircraft.

Itinerary:

SYD-BKK (TG472)
BKK-FRA (TG922)

MXP-BKK (TG941)
BKK-SYD (TG475)

costs were 150,000/120,000 (F/J) and US$174.27 per person in taxes and booking fees

UPDATE: I noticed that two more F seats recently became available on each of TG922, TG941 and TG475. So to take advantage of this I rebooked the two passengers travelling on J awards on F awards. They still have to sit in J on TG472 but at least all four of us will now be together in the F cabin on the other three flights. Cost was an extra 30,000 DM and a change fee of $150 per person. With a bit of luck another two F seats might appear on TG472 and we will be able to fly F all the way there and back.

Hi Stephen,

If they do become available you would need to pay another $150 each as reticket again? I have been discouraged to do this by help desk as they advised when you cancel original flights there is a chance they wont pickup the same seats again. Or are they just trying to reduce their workload?

From what I have read on the long FT thread it depends which agent you get. Some agents say you must pay the $150 per ticket to change even if its merely to take a newly available F seat on an already booked F award and others will do it for free.

As with all such issues the advice is if you get the wrong agent simply politely hang up and call back later to get another agent. Incidentally that was my experience in rebooking the two J award passengers into an F award on the same itinerary. The first agent I called came up
with some absolute nonsense as to why this couldn't be done - she claimed that she could only book an F award on a partner airline if there was F seat availability in every segment. Translation: she didn't want to be bothered doing it. So I hung up and called back and the second agent had no problem doing it.

As for your second question yes this is interesting issue. As I understand it usair may not be able to simply grab a newly available F seat for you even if you already have an F award for that segment. It may be necessary to create a brand new F award which means that if there are not enough F award seats available at that moment in every segment then they would have to cancel your existing award to free some up - which may be risky.

My rebooking from J to F did not run this risk because there were seats available in every segment without me needing to release the ones I already had. So the agent was able to book a JFFF award and only then cancel the existing JJJJ award. If there was a risk that by trying for FFFF I would lose JFFF then I wouldn't do it.

Just to add another data point, I booked the following a couple of weeks ago.

SYD-BKK TG F
BKK-ZRH LX F (2 week stop)
ZRH-YUL LX F (23 hour transit)
YUL-YTZ AC Y (4 days)
YTZ-YUL AC Y
YUL-ZRH LX F (14 hour transit)
ZRH-BKK LX F
BKK-SYD TG F

Total was 140 000 miles and ~$225 in taxes.

I've got some tickets to the Euro this year in Europe, so I'll be heading there with mates for 6 weeks of Europe fun. Departing end of July, returning early August.

Booked the following a few days ago:

SYD-BKK TG F
BKK-ZRH TG F
ZRH-MUC LH J
MUC-KBP LH J

IBZ-BCN JK Y
BCN-FRA LH J
FRA-ZRH LH J
ZRH-BKK LX F
BKK-SYD TG F

Very happy to have booked this - considering the final cost was $600 more than what my friend paid for in economy, and he got a good deal. Tried to get him to join me, but he wouldn't listen. Ohh well..

Really nice booking but shouldn't it be 150,000 miles? Maybe I'm missing something.

It is often reported that people are charged the miles rate for the destination, even if having a 'real' stopover in a higher priced zone.

Oh really, thats great then! I'm a bit envious of the taxes too, mine were $360(incl booking) per person.

In laws just booked the following for a trip down under in Nov/Dec

YVR - NRT AC J (17 hour layover/forced stop)
NRT - BKK TG J (10 day stopover)
BKK - SYD TG J (destination)
SYD - YVR AC J

Total was 110,000 miles and am waiting for them to send me the details of the taxes and charges but they're pretty happy with the trip.

They weren't keen on heading back to Canada via Asia as the flights and layovers were long but I'm pretty stoked they got seats on the AC flight from SYD -> YVR

Which dates will you be in IBZ?

I will be there 27-30 July :p

If we're talking Spanair do you realise they shut up shop this past weekend? QR walked away from potential financing leaving them no choice.

Yeah I read about the demise. I'm actually on a QF oneworld award ticket so all is good ;)

I was also looking at popping over to IBZ for a few days during the summer in Europe.

Space opening maybe? ;)

Don't look any further and just do it! IBZ will go off! And yeah, Space is on my list!!!

Sorry to say but looks like TG is pulling the A346 from MXP and replacing it with 777 (not the 300ER). This means no F cabin.

I'm guessing you will be be downgraded into J but still end up stumping up the full 150k.
:(

Check the timetable out but it looks fairly certain now. Seems like LHR is staying on A346 while SYD will switch back to A346 with lower frequency...seems like MXP is supplying the aircraft required.

Edit: saw your update that you later got all 4 pax on an F award! Not good! Perhaps you can reroute but what are the chances of finding 4F elsewhere!?

That sucks for those affected. I'm on the A346 SYD-BKK F on July 6th. Let's hope it stays the A346!
