Upgrading to F?

My wife and I managed to get 2 F upgrades on LAX-SYD.

The service is excellent and the food is great. Wine selection is fantastic. Dom Perignon and Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonay. (What happen to KRUG?)

Best of all is the flatbed compared with the stupid sky-bed in business.

However, the seat is old, annoying tray table, and the TV is tiny. The new CX business class seats are far better than QF First seats. Flat bed, Huge TV, and a remote control which shows time remaining on the flight. The seat seemed cramped at first, but when you are lying down, there is alot more room.

Would I upgrade again given the opportunity? Yes, only because the skybed is not flat and is very cramped when lying down.

I'm sure this is common knowledge (though I wasn't aware), but it appears QF are slowly updating their First cabins with slightly improved amenities. On a recent SYD-LAX leg we had the old cabin as you described, but on LAX-JFK and LHR-SYD we had a slightly improved cabin with much larger TV screens (they use the same mounts so they don't fit properly when stowed), slightly improved decor (less brown) and what looked like newly re-upholstered seats.

The only other long-haul First I've flown is BA and that's pretty much identical to Qantas albeit with a slightly different seat configuration.

Whilst I agree with you views on the CX IFE being significantly ahead of QF in both J and F, I cannot agree with the views on the seat. I found the CX new J seats to be quite uncomfortable in the bed position, with lumpy bits sticking up in all the wrong places. I had to raise the head about 5 degrees to get the lump out of the middle of my back - might as well been a 5 degree slopy bed in that case.

For QF F beds, the most comfortable method I have found is to use the duvet underneath you as an extra mattress layer, and then blanket on top.

Now I do agree the CX seats are better than QF J Skybeds (Mk I), but I would take a QF F seat over CX J seat any day. But of course this is just my personal view based on my personal experience, and in no way invalidates your views on the matter.

The lumps in the CX J seat al;so annoy me.They seem to be in all the wrong places.Their F seat though was good but i still wouldnt say great.Unfortunately I am unlikely to be able to compare to the QF F seat.

Thanks everyone.
Have put in for the upgrade (J -> F) from HKG to LHR. Only time I have flown Qantas F the seat didn't work at all and it was an overnight BKK - SYD flight. Very annoyed!
