I have booking for flying economy on 14 hr flight. outward flight is day-time, return is 12 hours but overnight. Which would be better for upgrade or is it all a matter of personal preferences?

If it was me I would put an upgrade request in for both flights, and then if you got the outward upgrade and didn't want to upgrade the return as well, cancel the request. The chances of getting any one upgrade are pretty slim unless you're a WP so better to double your chances of at least getting something.

It would help if you told us the route and your QF status, although I am guessing its AU-USA. Those routes can prove difficult to get an upgrade on, so as suggested try for both and expect nothing.

As for day vs night, it depends if you want to sleep or enjoy the service...

Unless you're pretty lucky or have status with the airline you won't have much of a chance on a AU-USA flight, as they tend to be heavily booked at pretty much all times of the year. The best chance will be to avoid flights leaving Australia over the weekend as a lot of business travellers aim to be back in the US come Monday or Tuesday morning. The best bet would be a flight departing Wednesday onwards, IMHO.

This time of year is also best as most business travellers don't get back into heavy international travel until after January. Again this is my opinion, and may be different to others experience.
