(I hope this is the appropriate area for this question)
I have been on and off here for a long time, mostly lurking, but it is time for me to try business on an international flight. Trying to get my head around the seating allocations etc and international flights is doing my head in, so many acronyms! I've read all of the other sections but I can't access the seat maps from my ipad.

Can someone please guide me to the right area if necessary, but wanting to work out the likelihood of upgrading to business (or premium economy) from a saver fare to LA around the 7th Feb.

Current status is Gold. Travelling with my father, and want to upgrade him as well if possible.

BNE to LAX (via SYD if required)
Returning the 22-23rd Feb

Also do you qualify for any status credits with upgrades? A google search of this forum gave conflicting answers so not sure if it's changed or not? I need a few points to maintain gold, so will need some SC's...

Such noob questions. Thank you!
Ryan

Assuming you are flying QF and are talking about upgrading using QFF points, and also assuming that a saver fare is upgradeable -

- you will get points and SCs for the fare you originally booked
- your chance of getting an upgrade will depend on the loadings on your specific flight, which can be checked on expertflyer but may obviously change between now and the flight date
- to give yourself the best chance of an upgrade, lodge your request as early as possible
- be mentally prepared to fly in the cabin you originally booked so that you don't have a miserable flight if the upgrade doesn't come through.

Good luck.

As far as how many points are required to request an upgrade, are all Y to J the same price?

i was quoted 80 K points SYD - DFW.

Getting an upgrade is like winning Lotto from OZ to USA, best of luck.

We got 4 x J>F upgrades on QF11 in Dec ... Upgrades can be plentiful IME.

A fair chunk of the Premium cabins are full of upgrades.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thank you for the responses guys! Will be a good way to see.

unfortunately I can not get expertflyer to work on my ipad (along with other sites), but will be back home in a few days for a software update.

the only follow up question I have to Anna is how to tell what fares are upgradable? I went on the link from the quanta mega thread and it mentioned saver fare codes were upgradable. When looking at booking though, I could not tell what the booking code may have been?

thank you all!
