Hello All,

I have been lucky enough to score a work trip to NY in April and my wfe will be joining me for a holiday at the end. Plan is to both fly CX so that we can be on same flights home (cheapest fare for work purposes and best way to get there from Perth)

As a WP with Qantas, is there anyway I will be able to link our bookings together (booked separately as mine goes through the work travel provider) and/or use my QFF points to try to upgrade my wife to premium economy?

thanks

Sorry....QFF points can only be used to upgrade QF flights.

You should be able to have your bookings linked.

You can't upgrade with QF points on anything other than QF metal, sorry.

If you have some Amex MR points, worth checking if there is availability for the CX HkG-JFK-HKG legs with Asia Miles (or even Alaska Miles via SPG). Cant imagine PER-HKG will have availability but you could check too

Ps:could even buy Alaska miles-think there is an offer on at the moment.

You could see if any of your CX flights carry a QF code (I suspect not but worth a look) and attempt to book through QF your wife's flights.

You can also see if you can book your wife's flights using QFF points outright (will need to use QFF call centre to find out CX FF seat availability).

A call to CX will allow them to note the bookings are "together" in case of delays/issues but wont put them on the same pnr (just a note in each that you are travelling together). You may still need to select seats separately.

You wont be able to upgrade a CX coded flight using QFF points.

I think QF codeshares on CX have pretty much gone the way of the dodo, and have done for a number of years.

I'm confused at this. I am also a newbie to all of this, and when I started a thread on the subject - a member replied with:
Going to Europe try Y (economy) to HKG then second try HKG in J to your destination on CX, QR and other OneWorld Airline partners.

Am I missing something or are the first two messages contrary to the third? The more I read on all of this, the murkier it becomes. Here is essentially would I would ideally like to do:

- Fly SYD-HKG economy, with either QF or CX
- HKG-LHR/CDG/FRA using points to upgrade to business class

Ideally would do the same on the return trip however suspect I wouldn't have enough points for that (will have at least 150k QF FF points and there will be two of us travelling).

Aware of sites like Award Nexus and Expert Flyer which assist, but am at a loss on how I would go about achieving this - especially when some things I read appear contrary to others.

You can use QFF points to book flights on QF, CX, or any other oneworld partner plus EK and JQ in Y Economy, J Business, or F First

You can only use QFF points however to upgrade flights booked using the QF code on QF metal

No the messages aren't contradictory.

You are able to use QFF points to purchase an award ticket for those flights on the Oneworld carriers mentioned.

You are not able to purchase an economy ticket on those carriers and apply for an upgrade using QFF points.

It's relatively straightforward.

you can book OW flights using Q points, including J and F.

You cannot upgrade a purchased fare on another OW airline using QF points.

Thanks all. I didn't mean to accuse anyone, I meant to say that in my head the messages I quoted were contradictory, instead I just misunderstood :) . Seems crystal clear now and I appreciate the quick and helpful responses.

So using the Using Points Calculator tool on the QF website one would need 92k points per person for an Award Ticket for HKG-CDG. I would not expect I'd be able to accumulate the points needed in a few months to score that.

Alternatively If I booked Flex Economy with QF from SYD-LHR it is 60k points per person (?) to request an upgrade to Business. Of course from what I have read here, getting the upgrade is very unlikely in our case given what everyone calls "the lottery" with QF upgrades and given our Bronze status.

I am finding this points/upgrades game very intriguing and can definitely see what the fuss is about, however in our case I expect riding in business class for the trip from Asia/Middle East to Europe isn't likely given a combination of lack of points and QF status. A lot to learn!

On an unrelated note, I am having an equally hard time constantly using IATA codes for airlines and airports when ICAO codes are what I use every day at work! :D

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Sign up for one of the credit card deals and you could have 100k pretty quickly.

Agree you cannot use QFF points to uprade CX operated flights.

However I still believe there is a way to upgrade some specific LA operated flights which have the QF code on them. Anyone know if that is still a thing?

Not directly relevant to this thread of course, but it was an exception to the rule on upgrades being only for QF operated(metal) flights.

THanks for the guidance everyone. Guess I will just have to share my business class seat with her on the long leg from NY.

On the qf website do a search for Perth to New York with tick in classic rewards and hopefully reward seats available
