Probably v basic question and I'm assuming the answer is no, but thought I'd ask anyway: I'm travelling Business on CX to Europe and would like to upgrade at least some of the legs to First if possible using my QF FF points (Gold status).... is this possible?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Welcome to AFF mrsa :)

Generally programs only allow upgrades paid with miles or vouchers on their own flights (operated by and flight number of). There are some limited exceptions. Star Alliance is slowly rolling out a program of alliance wide mileage upgrades (so far it is Lufthansa, Austrian, ANA, Singapore). This seems to be quite popular and so we can hope that One World may also do something similar in the future.

But for now, you need CX miles to upgrade CX flights.

Keep in mind also that CX flights do not earn the Status Bonus in the QF program. So as a Gold FF member, you will not receive the 50% bonus FF points you would receive if you were booked on QF or BA for the same journey.

Some CX flights carry AA codeshares, and using the AA codeshare you will earn the QF FF status bonus. However, I think most of the CX/AA codeshares are either trans-Pacific or intra-Asia. I don't think the codeshare to/from Australia and to/from Asia.

*A wide mileage upgrades has been extended (just yesterday) to include Asiana, Thai and TAP Portugal.

Thanks NM - that's a piece of information of which I was not aware. ;)

With some FFPs it is based on flight number (eg QFF), with others it is the operating carrier that matters (eg LH Miles and More).

Thanks all for the replies. I presume that I will still earn status credits at the expected rate on CX?

Yes, you earn the same Status Credits with all OneWorld airlines. You also earn the cabin bonus (25% for business class and 50% for first class). Its only the Status Bonus (25% for Silver, 50% for Gold, and 100% for Platinum) that is only provided on QF, AA and BA flight numbers.

I appreciate all the information I read on this site but still get confused. I may be booking a flight from bris-rome and the connection is through hk with i think cathay pacific. it will have qantas flight no. does this mean i will receive my cabin bonus points as silver?
cheers, trish

If you are flying on the QF codeshare then in theory you should receive the status bonus of 25% for silver. If you are flying business class or first class then you will receive a cabin bonus as explained by NM.

Just check that you are not on the CX flight no as some economy classes earn no FF points or half the FF points if you are a QF frequent flyer with a CX flight no. You do earn Status credits though.

Codeshare flights depend on the flight number on which you are booked. If the flight number QF then you earn the Status Bonus (25% for Silver 50% for Gold and 100% for Platinum). You also earn the Cabin Bonu if the flight is coded and operated by OneWorld (25% for Business Class and 50% for First Class).

These bonuses apply to the base points earned.
