Not really a ff question, i know, but am travelling to France and Italy on an N class ticket in April MEL-SIN-CDG-LHR-MEL as a WP, with my bride to be. Travelling QF to CDG and BA on the way back.

Couple of questions;

1/ I have 10 upgrade credits, one of which expires on Dec 31 but have so far been unsuccessful in getting an upgrade on either the MEL-SIN or SIN-CDG legs for me and partner - any suggestions? I am particularly concerned to try and complete by Dec 31 as i dont know how much flying i will be doing in the first few months of 04 (to make up for the expiring credit...) which means that it will be difficult to have the required 10 upgrade credits that i need.

2/ As a WP can i use QF/BA first class lounges with my QF Silver partner all the way to CDG and back?

3/ We are travelling down through Italy and France and will probably fly back on a cheapie (either Ryanair or Easyjet) to Paris from Rome or Milan for our flight back to OZ. Can anyone recommend a OW (cheap) alternative?

4/ If we do fly back Ryanair to Paris, it will be through Beauvois (spelling?) Can anyone suggest the best way to get from there to CDG without spending a fortune!

thanks for your advice,

Simon

You'll have no problem accessing Qantas-operated First lounges as a Platinum member, and you can have one guest (you don't need a guest pass). Not sure about BA-operated lounges - you'll be able to access without a problem as long as you're on a oneworld flight, but you may need guest passes for your partner. The First lounge in Singapore is quite good, reasonable food (including hot soup) and great showers.

One other point, have you thought about leaving Europe through Rome, using the Cathay/Qantas codeshare from Rome via Hong Kong?

Simon, my answers FWTW:

1. I understand your need to try and use but I don't like your chances of waitlist coming through before 31 December (i.e. 4 months prior to travel) - I presume you are waitlisted on both flight for U seats. Would be a terrible waste given that earning one goes from 250SC's to 450 post 1/1/04.

2. As already answered, WP status will get you and a guest in. You'll love MEL, SIN and LHR First lounges. You're going to be creating a monster with your wife though (she'll grow to love the treatment, J seats, etc...just ask Mrs LW)

3 & 4. Sorry, can't help you here, not a regular traveler through Europe on OW. thadocta may be able to help, otherwise try the Oneworld Forum under FlyerTalk Miles.

Did I hear my name mentioned?????

In all seriousness - and I mean it, I would not be foregoing lounge access (along with the free drinkies, etc.) for nothing - I would be considering train travel for your intra-European travel, particularly from southern-Europe - Italy, for example - to NW Europe - France, for example.

The trains are well decked out, have more than adequate catering facilities, are fast (how often do you get to do 350km/h whilst still on the ground???) and are not subject to weather delays.

Give it a thought.

As for Lindsays suggestion of visitting the oneworld forum on FlyerTalk, I would suggest the BA forum would be a more appropriate forum to ask - the OW forum tends to get bogged down with questions about OWE itineraries.

on a similar matter

I need another 50 status credits before I receive my next upgrade credit, however that won't happen between now and Jan 1 2004. Does that mean that i will need to actually earn an additional 250 sc's (or whatever it is) to receive another status credit from Jan 1? I am sure that Qantas will do the right thing by their top tier ff's, won't they???

Thanks for all your feedback on the other stuff guys, training though Europe certainly has a lot of appeal!

I caught the train - http://www.thalys.com/ - from Brusslels to Paris last year, cost me €98 for the trip, got lunch, two half-bottles of an excellent red, as well as the opportunity to travel at 320km/h (according to the end-of-carriage speed display).

For intra-European travel, train really IS the way to go, it is so much more civilised.

Good Question Simon. I am in exactly the same situation and would like some clarification on this one too.

e.g is it going to be 50 SCs + 250 = 300 SCs ? Or will they just do it from the next time you earn these remaining 50 status credits from under the old rules ?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Come on guys, we're talking Qantas here ......... of course they'll add the 200 SC's on 1 Jan .... ie 50 SC's remaining for next UC will suddenly on 1 Jan, become 50 +200 = 250 SC for next UC (note it is going from 250 to 450). They wouldn't want all the low frequency year leisure flyers having a chance of getting a U/C ... imagine the scenario come 2008 when they would all suddenly hit 250 SC's, and start whinging to Ray (Martin) that they couldn't use that upgrade.

It's a pity that those business travellers who are just short of the mark (and with the christmas shutdown, may not be travelling, like me) have to go and earn another 250 before the next UC
