Quick Question:

I know the availability of upgrades from Syd to LHR depend on spare seats, and the number of higher status passengers who are a head of you on the upgrade waitlist.

But is it easier to upgrade a SYD-LHR flight or a SYD-SIN-LHR flight. Either Y to J or J to F

Thanks

Hi
I believe that the "easier" routes are SYD-MEL-HKG-LHR - but that might just be J->F
Good luck and lodge that request NOW!
Cheers

I've only ever tried a request on 2 occasions and was successful both times.

LHR-SIN-SYD (with stop in SIN)

SYD-LHR

Both were J > F and over christmas

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If you do it as two sectors it will cost more points than a single upgrade.

I attempted to get my 6 mths pregnant wife an u/g on SYD->LHR about this time last year so can speak from experience.

If you book on one flight number (e.g. QF1) essentially if you can not get the u/g for the entire flight then they will not give it to your for one segment. E.g. there might be 15 spare seats SYD->BKK but none from BKK->LHR so they will not u/g you on the SYD->BKK leg. Also if there are say 6 or so seats still available BKK->LHR they will still not u/g you as they are trying to sell the seats for the 8 hours you are in the air.

If you however book each leg as separate flight numbers then you are in with a shot of getting the u/g on only one leg if there are seats available for it. Then at least if you get to BKK and they have not sold the seats that they had left over you are in with a chance of getting the u/g all the way.

Needless to say my wife booked on one flight number the entire way and she spent the entire trip down the back of the bus, even though business was 1/2 full for one of the legs. Same thing on the way home. Luckily on the way back the seat next to her was blocked so was a little more comfortable than could have been.
