Upgrade using points in US

Travelling between New York and Orlando on AA next month and would like to use some points to upgrade if possible. Any advice on how I do this. Do I just phone AA and try or do I contact Qantas. Never used points before on anything but Qantas

So you want to use QF points to upgrade an AA operated flight?
That is currently not possible. It is only possible to use QF points to upgrade a QF operated and marketed flight.
QF and AA are looking at the possibility of allowing points upgrades on the other airline as part of their updated transpac joint venture, but if or when that will happen is not known.
