Was fortunate and upgraded to business on way over to London from Syd on points..
Don't think there is a value in upgrading for way home ?
I don't have a meeting or work ( I am retired)
I also live quite close to Sydney airport.
I do have a few points just prefer to use for going over to somewhere
Already have 1st class lounge access and reasonable baggage allowance

The heading is a question, but I read most of the the post as a statement.

Sounds like you have already decided and want to be talked into it ?

If you have the points, upgrading on a long haul is a very good way of using them.

I would go for the upgrade. Sign up bonuses from changing credit cards and meeting required spend could easily replenish your points balance.

True but if retired the OP possible may not (or in fact may very well) meet the income threshold required, even if they have assets.
