Hey Everyone

I just did my first Y flight in AA and I got a bit told off by flight attendant (in a nice way) that I should have applied to get on the upgrade list and that if I did I would have been ahead of the OWS lady that was just moved up...

What is this list they speak of and how do you get on it?

I have a LAX to JFK and JFK to LAS coming up so would like to take advantage of it.

Thanks

Don't think OW members can on AA flights?

500 Mile Upgrades

Oh i think it's this

Complimentary Upgrades

All elite status AAdvantage members enjoy complimentary upgrades to the next class of service when traveling on an eligible Economy Class ticket on American Airlines or American Eagle within and between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, The Bahamas, Bermuda, the Caribbean and between the U.S. and Central America and between the U.S. and Central America, as follows:
  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum® members may request complimentary upgrades when traveling on any purchased, published fare on eligible flights. You may also request a complimentary upgrade for one companion, if the companion is traveling on a full-fare* Economy Class ticket.
  • AAdvantage Platinum® and AAdvantage Gold® members receive complimentary upgrades for themselves and one companion, provided both are traveling on a full-fare* Economy Class ticket.
*Fares beginning with Y or B, excluding military/government fares. Companions traveling on any other eligible fare may be upgraded using purchased or earned 500-mile upgrades.

EXP don't use (or earn) 500 mile upgrades, they are simply given them on a "space available" basis.

I think the agent was incorrect as these are supposed to be an AAdvantage perk. I don't think AA's core/legacy systems can differentiate between EXP and oneworld Platinum (Plat & sapphire / Gold and Ruby) and she probably saw you on the PALL list as EXP.

YMMV on this; I once asked for a same day standby for an earlier flight in coach; As a WP I was indeed given a BP for the earlier flight - in first class.

More on these upgrades here:

First up, understand that the premier loyalty hook for the AAdvantage program frequent fliers is UPGRADES. And as such, there are many varied and intricate ways to get upgrades on AA...

For those who credit to QFF, the most useful way is to purchase an "instant upgrade" ticket when making a booking with AA. ("Generally", this gives you a confirmed seat in a premium cabin, at the time of booking, but often with less flexible conditions than a full price premium ticket.)

However, for those who use AAdvantage, there are a multitude of ways to upgrade; from the moment you make your booking right through to just before you board the aircraft.

The final upgrade opportunity (for AAdvantage members) is the gate upgrade. You may notice "upgrade lists" displayed on monitors near the gates, at many locations where AA departs from. This is the gate upgrade list, and to see your name on it, you generally need to request the agent at the gate desk to put it there (most often due to one's AAdvantage status.)

This magnificent list is actually a ranking order, determining who will get an upgrade to any empty premium cabin seats left on that flight. (Unlike Qantas, AA doesn't like to fly with empty premium cabin seats, they prefer to fill them with loyal customers via this final upgrade methodology.)

This particular upgrade list is noted on the manifest that the Flight Attendants receive. And it allows them to fill any remaining empty seats, in the premium cabin, once boarding is complete (e.g. say a Full Fare customer "no shows" leaving an empty seat).

Oneworld status is not a route for getting your name on this list. (Although, 1W members may get on this list via other routes, e.g. a First Class customer taking an involuntary downgrade, due to reroute, will most likely be the first name on the list, regardless of whether their affiliation is with AAdvantage or another 1W member airline.)

Now, as for the FA on the flight, for simplicity's sake many of them simply see a Oneworld status member as the equivalent in AAdvantage, so where it states "Emerald" they read "Executive Platinum", and apply the same benefits (even when the home airline benefits are not a privilege given to 1W status holders, e.g. like getting on this upgrade list). [There is an advantage to this vision, however, as some FAs may give you freebies from the BOB menu, if you are in Coach or on Eagle.]

The chance of an upgrade is not great if you dont have AA status. However the FA from your post suggested it was an OWS that was upgraded not an AA elite.
What I have seen happen, and unashamedly have done so myself successfully on Delta,is to go to the desk at the gate or ask at checkin if there was any chance of a QF OWE getting upgraded.Really doesn't hurt to ask.
I doubt on a LAX-JFK there would be insufficient AA elites to give you a chance.
