I am about to book two J class tickets to LAX for my wife & I.

We would like to use points to upgrade to F class.

In the members opinion/experience, would Syd or Mel give us a better chance of obtaining our upgrade?

We are both platinum with Qantas.

Thank you in advance for your advice/help.

Anthony

Two times I've been upgraded from J to F has been from MEL (but as a solo traveller). YMMV.

Maybe stating the obvious but make sure the flight you are on has F.
I have been caught a couple of times with booking Business hoping for upgrade to 1st and then realising no 1st class
This is on the Syd to LAX flight

Avoid Mel QF94/95, dreamliner, no 1st.

Qf93/94 used to be 380, with F but may have switched to 747.

Surprised MEL-LAX is currently 2 flights daily.

How long is a piece of string? It all depends on the date of a particular flight and the demand.

In general WP should find upgrades go OK and MEL generally is better, but as above make sure it's an A380 operating the service and has F... obviously going for 2 seats is going to add an extra wrinkle, but it's probably a reasonable chance.. unless you book onto a flight that's already pretty full. Tools like ExpertFlyer can assist in this regard.

Either way enjoy your flights.

Under "Your Questions" there is a "Flight Availability/Loadings & Upgrade Probability Help Desk" sticky thread. You can ask there for the loads of the flights you're interested in. Though the loads probably only starts to become a reasonable guide as to the chances fairly close to the flight.

QF reduced A380 services to 3 times per week from 10 February to 24 March filling the gaps with extra 787 services. QF had more than the two 787 needed for the daily 787 service and hadn't yet launched the PER-LHR flights.

It's possible if additional 787 arrivals lineup with periods of seasonally low demand to LAX from MEL that QF could do this again.

I don't think it would have switched to 747. Where have you heard that?

Anyway a search of F from MEL-LAX should confirm whether F is available on the dates in question. I looked at the rest of this week for QF93 and QF is selling F seats every day. It is school holidays in VIC though so the demand for flights would be pretty strong.

Depends heavily on when are you planning to travel. Can you give some proposed dates?

I'd lean towards Melbourne, but if there is a big event on at either end you will struggle.

I booked QF93 A380/QF94 A380 for a Thursday in August and back a Monday in September.....so see how I got with our upgrade requests...had a request for J to F filled MEL/LAX LAX/SYD for two back in 2015 so heres hoping

We got caught last year with G'Day Australia in LAX, plenty of J seats left, but not once Julie Bishop, Ian Thorpe, Hugh Sheridan, Alex Perry got their seats hmmmm lol
