Upgrade at gate

My son (6 years old) had/a a request to upgrade from W ( PE) to Business. The rest of the family is in paid business seats (it is a long story to explain why). At T - 10hrs today we got a text that “we were unable to confirm your upgrade request”. I believe he is still registered for an upgrade at the gate.

Does that text mean he definitely can’t get the upgrade?

It is showing J1 (at T - 5hrs) and he is a NB (despite earning 720 status credits last year). My partner and I (his parents) are both WP. We will obviously chat to them at the airport too.

Thanks

Welcome to AFF! So many questions...

But your main one is easy to answer. If it's J1 and you got that text, almost zero chance of an upgrade, sorry. Yes, you are still in the running even with that text - but with J1, no status, almost certainly won't happen.

I didn't think a six year old could have a separate seat let alone different cabin to the parents/guardians.
Could the age of your child be impacting the ability to upgrade ?
Welcome to AFF :)
He is on a separate ticket and Qantas booked both of them. There is no “technical” reason according to Qantas in terms of the arrangement. The bookings are linked.

Obviously my partner or myself will actually sit in his PE seat if no upgrade.

Thanks

I am more annoyed that he should be gold, but for some difficulties with the 4 Qantas flight rule. But it is what it is.

My partner or I will have to fly long haul PE for the first time in 12 years 😂

J1 is very ambiguous. It could mean that yes there is a seat available and it'll be down to the wire who gets the seat (likely a WP travelling on a full Y fare if anything). But it could also mean that there are no further J seats available. For instance, if the seat went "mechanical" and cannot be used or if the seat is reserved for NRSA (i.e. pilots deadheading to a port).

In the overall context there is no ambiguity.

J1 means Qantas are willing to "sell" one business seat at full rate irrespective of any being available (or not), even if it means downgrading or even denying boarding to other PAX.

They won't be having J1 for a broken seat - at its most basic, that would present a J(-1) situation.
