I noted the following:
...
With upcoming changes to how airlines distribute their inventory, there are going to be more examples of things being different depending on how they were booked.
I have come across other mentions of such changes.

Is anyone able to shed more light on what may be going to happen in this area?

It is IATA's "New Distribution Capability" - IATA - New Distribution Capability, which will see an alternative to traditional GDS distribution. The exact impact is a bit blurry with those airlines that have released an NDC offering doing a limited introduction at the moment. QF released theirs a couple of weeks ago, but I haven't been in to see what it is like.

Without knowing much, the cynic in me suggests that this will allow further opportunities and expansion of "unbundling" of fares, it seems to allow travel agents to sell added baggage, meals, seating, other add ons etc. It's all really heading in one direction .....
