If you have points sitting in one of the three credit card options which still allow you to transfer to QF without being a 'forced earn' card, I would have thought it would be much better value transferring to the other airline options you have, even with a bonus percentage.

Agreed. The principle of direct earn cards annoy me, although QFF is my only programme so my objection to the principle is largely irrelevant.

Amex Platinum is the second, and third is not really an option for most, but Amex Corporate cards offer a Membership Rewards Spirit option, which limits your airline transfers to Qantas, while still leaving you with the hotel program transfer options.

I had this for a while but changed to Ascent (which gives you 9 airline transfer partners) when I realised how hosed I was getting on value for my spend with QFF.

Ooops, I thought Select/Prestige allowed warehousing and then sweeping to choice of programme including QFF and that the lower cards required the additional fee for QFF direct sweep. I could be wrong.

OK then. I was aware of the $49 for the Platinum and Signature cards. For some reason I thought it didn't apply to Select/Prestige. My bad!

I'm still unclear on the 3 non-direct sweep ....

I knew I should have added a or at the end of that last statement. Paying extra to lock yourself in to probably the most profitable frequent flyer scheme out there while the "Simpler and Fairer Enhancement Team" continues their never ending quest to squeeze value out of your points makes no financial sense to me.

So I'm currently sitting on 450,000 points warehoused with Amex. Am I better off transferring them to Qantas and taking advantage of the 20% bonus, or transferring to AA via Starwood? I have no experience of redeeming with AA, only recently opened an account with them and have no points at present.

Depends how you plan to use the miles...
Even with slightly less AA miles than QF - AA is cheaper redemptions and lower taxes (by a long way).

The only real reason you might send to QFF is that you're Platinum and it could be handy for upgrades.
