THEY are the unspoken rules of air travel, yet many passengers appear to ignore them. Airline seat etiquette boundaries are often broken; resulting in in-flight fights and air rage rants.
From rows over the arm rests to arguments over body odour, travellers’ holidays are ruined before they have even arrived at their destination.
(see Unspoken rules of air travel revealed | Travel Advice | News.com.au for more details).

Love this one ....
never, ever, take your shoes and socks off

Guilty! Anyone else? I always take my shoes off on longer flights and often on shorter flights, (at least once we are well into the climb) and on longer ones usually change my socks into airline provided socks (or old airline ones I have brought for the flight)

Given the airflow in most cabins, I cannot recall a single instance in 1000+ flights where BO or foot odour from a fellow passenger has been an issue. Get into a taxi on the other hand, and sit anywhere near the driver .....

Oooh I can!

Will never forget it, coming back from the dreaded OOL during a school holiday period.

Was sitting somewhere near the front when a row of 3 pretty ferral looking guys sat down behind us. Thinking nothing of it (they weren't loud or obnoxious, just "feral" looking) they took their seats and that was that.

Till about 5 minutes later, almost simultaneously, there was a huge "eeeew" from what seemed like the whole front half of the cabin. FA's were called over to investigate and it turned out that 2 of the 3 guys behind us took their shoes off.

They were promptly told to put them back on.

I do this too, on international where you're provided with socks, but I don't take off my socks, I simply put their sock over my socks, as planes are usually chilly anyway. Any smells should then be blocked.

+1 Same here

Yup, me too.
And also, is it just me or does the cabin temp on DJ flights for the past 12 months or so appear extremely hot?

I don't sing to my ipod. But is talking along to my learn spanish podcast ok?

+1 to using the airline socks. Why give them out if you can't use them?

As for don't take off your shoes - yep sit there, get a DVT and die a horrible death, it's the least you can do to not stink out other people....

not strictly air travel ettiquite but.. last week in the MEL QP I wanted to use one of the computers. About half of them had people sitting in front of them were using their laptops [ie not using the desktop computer]. I politely asked someone if they weren't using the computer could they move along so I could use it - the reply "no - I was here first".

Unplugging it from the desktop and using the LAN cable to connect to the internet via laptop?

Sounds about right but who has a laptop without wifi?

This sounds like simple bad manners.

Some companies have a ban on doing business work (e.g. VPN) over the air (so to speak).

I know that RJ connection may not be secure either, but for many, thems tha rules.

I do not know why people are complaining about reclining seats in Y. As long as for takeoff and landing, plus for meals you put the seat up, I think I should be able to recline all other time, as it is by design.

But then again last time I flew CX SYD-HKG-LHR/AMS-HKG-SYD on Y, the whole flight was on the new shell seats which means it cannot be reclined. I actually don't mind it knowing that the seat in front of me won't hit my head.

Probably just as annoying as singing. It would be to me anyway...

(Off topic, the Show Time Spanish podcast is really very good).

Or why does the skybed have shoe storage? Just shower in the QC beforehand and no one will care.

I've never understood the amazing amount of dis-courtesy in the sky. Either people are pigs on the ground as well, or their manners fly out the air-conditioner.

It never ceases to amaze me how people get shirty when you politely ask them to put their seat up during a meal service. Most FA's are pretty good and will by default ask pax to up their seats during the service, but there's always the one difficult one.

Seats are there for reclining. If Pax actually had some manners they'd recline slowly and carefully (as I do) as to give a person behind some warning they're about to be wearing their laptop as a beard:)

Maybe they should hand out cheat-sheets to courtesy with the e-ticket BP wallet:)

To be fair, sometimes meal times happen at the strangest hours, when all you want to do is recline and sleep. It's not your fault the airline and the passenger behind you want to eat, so why should you have to wait for them to finish.

And by the way, I'm just playing devils advocate here. I hate reclining my seat for fear of what the person behind me will say. Freaks me out.

On my first flight in China they played an animated video. It was a cartoon about showing appropriate behavior on board.

No language problems at all. It was pretty obvious. Man takes his shoes off and the man beside him dies. Even covered issues like wearing deoderant and flushing the toilet.

What a welcome.

If the contents of the departure Customs hall is anything to go by today, my condolences go out to the passengers on JQ flying from PER-DPS this morning.

A bunch of feral bogans (25+) aboard who went through customs at the last minute and were drunk enough at 10am to make AFF members blush ;)

Agreed. If you're asleep and don't notice a meal service, then that's not your fault. If you're awake and knowingly reclining whilst devouring your pittance of a meal whilst the other person is contorted, then it's not on IMHO :) It's only for 15-20 minutes, then you can recline again.

Once again, just my 2c
